Confused

HI All,

Well I woke up today,  I guess that is a good thing, at least that is what people around me have told me from time to time (people at work)    I had breakfast,  watching the news and doing laundry.  I have to hang up some of my clothes, I don't put everything into the dryer.   Then I am going to clean my bathroom, do some gardening. I have to pull up some gladiolas,  then I am going to go through some clutter in my room.  have lunch, and read the Star Trek book I am currently reading.   Then I have to walk a neighbor's dog.  I walk him twice a week for her (I work around my Home Depot schedule.  she used to ask me to walk him 5 days, now it's Wed and Thurs mid afternoon)   I am off Thurs (except this week they cut my hours so I am only working this week on Sun)

Then I plan to watch some TV.  Will and Grace is on tonight. As well as Orville, Project Runway and Ice Road Truckers.  I am so glad I can watch these shows on demand.   It's funny how either there will be hardly anything to watch on TV or too many things on at the same time.

I am confused as to what to do with my life.  My birthday is next Thurs.  I'll be 55 and I feel like my life is pretty much over.  I have a dead end job, stressful and something I hate.    I wasn't happy when I turned 50 because many people are planning on retirement.  I've known several people who are retired,  including my housemate.   A neighbor just retired about a month ago, I have an online friend who retired last year, and a former neighbor who also retired last year.   Another online friend just retired and is doing something she really loves, namely writing. She's become a successful writer and has her books available online.   She writes Scottish historical romance stories (like Highlander type stories) apparently it is a successful genre.  when I tried to write, I sold some books, but wasn't really successful.  Sometimes I think about writing.  I even have an idea, or at least a scene in my head.   They say write what you know.  Well I've come to know the DC area fairly well.   My scene starts off with someone who wakes up on one of the metro trains in DC and doesn't know how he got there, perhaps he is alone on the train or few people on the train.  And that is pretty much it.  I haven't really worked out a plot.  But I thought it was an interesting idea.     But I haven't actually written anything.

I feel like there has been SOMETHING I was supposed to do with my life,  but it's like taking the wrong fork in the road.  I feel like I went the wrong way and can't figure out what to do.   I'd like to be one of those people who retire, but I don't see that happening.  (I did read an article in the Washington Post about seniors who can't retire because they have no or little finances.

I just don't know how not to get myself motivated to do something.  I am like a turtle in a shell that would rather retreat than put myself out there and find something I want to do.   I am sick of jobs that are just jobs.  I want something that excites me or makes me happy.

Thanks for letting me vent.

hi Linda, i'm so glad, you're keeping busy, and planning some good days :) it can help so much, when we plan days like that, having something to achieve, or something to look forward too, really can help us keep balanced, in our every day life :) i know you've had some emotional times, and i think it's a wonderful character of your strength, that through the rough times, you keep focused on keeping busy, and wanting to achieve more :) You have that great inner strength, that keeps hope always alive, that you will be able to have more things to do, with your days :) You're a wonderful person, and a great friend to my family and i over the years :) We appreciate you all, and are so thankful, for your friendship :)
sometimes we find a passion in our lives, that becomes a hobby, that we enjoy :) i know you love gardening, being amongst nature :)maybe there will be an opening, at one of the garden nature sanctuaries, in your area, where you could work, be there, to tend the plants, maybe even give tours of those nature sanctuaries :) i want you to know, i believe in you, and always will :) You are a strong person, and have so much to look forward too :) i know age, numbers, can sometimes scare/worry us, but i believe, once you find that special hobby, you enjoy every day, the only number that will matter then, is there only being 24 hours in a day, and not being able to wait until the next day, to enjoy your hobby/passion more :)
keep strong, and always remember, we're with you dear friend :)

Hi Linda...Waking up definitely beats the alternative. : ) It sounds like you have a full day planned, and I hope you enjoy it. Is "Orville" a spoof of Star Trek or a serious show? My hubby and I wanted to watch the debut, but missed it. Is the new "Will and Grace" as funny as the old show? I like "Project Runway" too. I'm completely incompetent when it comes to sewing, so the competitors amaze me. My mom always told me that she "taught herself" to sew and therefore, she wouldn't teach me anything. My grandmothers passed away before I was old enough to learn. So, I'm barely able to sew on a button. : (

Many wishes for a happy birthday! (I'd love to send you a card if you feel comfortable sharing your address.) Fifty-five really isn't that old these days, and your life definitely isn't over. There are folks who become proficient in brand-new skills/hobbies in their 70s. Writing is definitely a talent that you could pursue further. The basic idea you have for a story is good one and leads to lots of interesting questions. How long has he been there? Is it present-day or in the past/future? Does he have a mission? Sometimes it helps me to just open up my computer and type whatever comes to mind (kind of like free writing), which can result in either usable stuff or jibberish. : ) Still, it works when you have a mental block about what to write next.

As for jobs, perhaps start by making a list of everything that makes you happy. Have you thought about why you tend to withdraw into your shell rather than step out into something new? You certainly are very intelligent and competent (and strong, as Chris said)...very capable of anything you'd set your mind to doing. I hope that you find a job that you enjoy so much, it doesn't feel like work. Please let me know if there's anything I can do to help with your search. Hugs, Judy
