Confused
Hello EveryoneMy name is Mary and I'm looking for some help with my decision to have bypass surgery or in the alternative lap band surgery. I'm looking mainly for information/stories on the bypass surgery since I have investigated the lap band and feel as though I have enough information on that. I recently went to see a surgeon "Dr. Migel Burch" at the Boston Medical Center, Boston, MA. (Dr. Hess is also a surgeon there)He has given me the choice of either surgery. So now I am very confused. Can anyone help me??Thank you.MJ

Hi MJ
I can only share my experience- hope it helps.
I am 6 weeks post op gastric bypass. My surgery went well, no complications and very minimal pain. I had surgery on a Monday and was discharged from the hospital on that wednesday. I had 4 little incisions, well 5 if you count my drain site. (the drain was removed prior to leaving the hospital.
The first week I was on full liquids. It didn\'t bother me a bit- NO HUNGER! I started really feeling \"myself\" again around week 2. I took 6 weeks off work, so the last 4 have felt like a vacation.
The reason I chose RNY instead of the band is because i KNOW that would cheat with the band. The band only constricts. You can slurp down a milkshake no problem! Whereas with the RNY, if you slurp down a milkshake you\'re going to be in trouble! I\'ve never experienced dumping syndrome, because i\'m too scared to cheat LOL- but i\'ve heard it is HORRIBLE.
Another reason i chose RNY instead of banding is because i know multiple people (workout buddies, coworkers, family, etc) that have had RNY and have had AMAZING results with it. On the opposite side, i have taken care of patient\'s with history of lap band and i always hear \"yeah, i got the lap band. i lost some weight, but i\'ve gained it all back plus some...\"
Remember, this is my own personal experience with RNY. I\'m not trying to convince you one way or the other...
Good luck with your decision.
