Comparing Different Types of Gaming Monitors
Among the different types of Liquid Crystal display (LCD) unit that can be used to view what is going on in a computer or use to view computer games is the Twisted Nematic (TN) type display unit, which is made from oldest technology as far as computer monitors are concerned. TN displays are cost effective, have highest refreshing rates and lowest response time.
Notable disadvantages of TN type screens are
- Color mixing and combinations are not usually good, which make them not suitable to be used by graphic designers, and professionals that are into multimedia.
- Very narrow viewing angles.
- Inability to display multimillion colors due to 6-color bit they are made from.
- Use dithering technique for display of colors, which do not look sharp and as good as other LCD-type monitors.
Another LCD-Type of screen that can also be used as gaming screen is the IPS (In-Plane Switching) type or technology, which was invented to correct the limitations, found in the TN-type display unit. The IPS-type screens are meant to correct the low quality of the colors of images displayed by the TN-type displays as well as improve the viewing angles of the TN screens.
Researchers on computer and gaming monitors have found a way to avoid stray fields in-between the pixels of the display unit by interconnecting transistors in array and as matrix. This is what was done in IPS LCD displays to improve their color production. IPS screens are suitable for multimedia and graphic design works.
Also, the shape of the electrodes of the display unit of IPS screens were modified and optimized to improve the viewing angle dependence of the display thereby correcting and improving on the narrow viewing angles of the TN LCD units. This means that different people that are viewing IPS-type monitors from different angles will see the same image. The viewing angles of this display unit can be adjusted as high as 178 degrees.
One shortcoming of the IPS display unit with its good image quality and better viewing angles is that it is very expensive compared to the TN-type display units. The IPS screens also have very high response time, which make them take more time than the TN-type 4K monitors to respond to alternation of images. Most IPS display units have highest refreshing rates of about 60Hz, which make them lag behind and is why they are not suitable for use for some computer games.
Other gaming monitors that are between the TN and IPS types of screen in terms of color production and viewing angles are the VA (Vertical alignment) type of LCD display. VA LCD-type of screens have higher contrast and better color production than the TN type as well as wider viewing angles that are not up to the IPS-type display unit. VA-type screens are suitable for graphic designing, engineering and multimedia works.
