COLGATE PALMOLIVE COMPANY

Palmolive-Peet's management initially assumed control of the combined organization. Beginning in the late 1980s, Colgate had begun development of a toothpaste that contained a gingivitis-fighting antimicrobial agent, triclosan. Researchers found a way to use polymers to bind triclosan to teeth for up to 14 hours, allowing users to fight bleeding gums and bad breath continuously with only two brushings a day.
The company employs approximately 300 staff and is headquartered in Sydney, New South Wales. Colgate's most dramatic acquisition to date came in 1992 with the $670 million purchase of the Mennen Company, which added to its personal care line the top U.S. deodorant brand, Mennen Speed Stick, and the number two baby-care brand, Baby Magic. In addition, Colgate gained footholds in skin-care and hair products, and the Mennen brands gained the power of Colgate's worldwide distribution and marketing reach.

When William Colgate built his counting house, in 1831, the city was as corrupt as it would ever be. Its two-acre lot was covered in piles of blackened boards and splintered beams, interspersed with stacks of new lumber.
The company acknowledged the criticism and agreed to make the necessary changes. During his tenure several new products were developed, including perfumes, essences and perfumed soap. But by the spring of 2000 he had spent tens of thousands of dollars in legal fees, and he still had some expensive repairs to make. No. 211 Pearl seemed to be one of the oldest buildings left in lower Manhattan.
Within a few weeks, a story on the building had appeared in the Times. By spring, 211 Pearl had been nominated for the National Register of Historic Places. More important, the State Historic Preservation Office had reviewed Al’s materials and come to a decision. It had no direct power to preserve the building, but it did oversee the use of Liberty bonds. Rockrose had been granted a hundred and seventy million dollars’ worth of the bonds. In order to keep them, the state office declared, the developer would have to preserve the façades of both 211 and 215 Pearl Street .
