Instructions 1: For descalers from drugstores and supermarkets


A large selection of decalcifying agents for household appliances can be found in drugstores and supermarkets: for example tabs, powder or liquid decalcifying agents. When buying, make sure that the product of your choice is suitable for filter coffee machines. Instructions for descaling can be found on every package. You usually do the following:


Depending on the instructions on the package, add a certain amount of the descaler to the coffee machine's water tank together with the specified amount of water.


Then switch on the appliance as you would for normal coffee making.


If the liquid mixture has run through completely, the coffee machine is descaled.
Now rinse with clear water to remove the residues of the descaler - sometimes several passes are required.

Remove calcification with common home remedies


Alternatively, there are various household remedies available, some of which are cheaper, for descaling your coffee machine. The advantage: Most of the funds are already available in the budget. In addition, such home remedies are often more environmentally friendly than ready to use limescale removers. For example, you can use vinegar essence, normal vinegar and baking soda or baking powder, which is largely made up of baking soda. Instructions 2: Descale the filter coffee machine with vinegar essence


Mix one cup of vinegar essence with two cups of water and pour the liquid into the water tank of your coffee machine.


Turn on the device and let it cycle about halfway.


Now turn off the coffee machine and let the vinegar essence work for 20 minutes.


Then start the machine again and let the remaining mixture run through.


Then you have to rinse twice with water before the machine can be used again for the next pot of coffee.

If the machine is very limescale, further runs may be necessary. Ordinary vinegar can also be used for descaling. However, since this contains a lower concentration of the lime-dissolving acetic acid, it has to be dosed higher: add about one cup of vinegar to one cup of water. Normal household vinegar does not contain any chemical additives. It is completely biodegradable and therefore protects the environment.


Instructions 3: Descale the filter coffee machine with baking soda or baking powder


Put a bag of baking soda or baking soda in a liter of hot water.


When it has dissolved, pour the mixture into the coffee machine and let this one go through.


Once soda comes with lime in contact, a place chemical reaction take place: the mixture foams. If there is severe calcification, several rinses are required. When hardly any foam bubbles form, decalcification is complete.

Clean the outside of the filter coffee machine


The coffee pot can be cleaned with normal detergent. If it is very calcified, rub it with citric acid or vinegar essence and then rinse it off thoroughly. A tip: gloves protect your hands from the acid.


You should always remove any small amounts of dirt, such as coffee residue, from the heating plate immediately. If a thorough cleaning is necessary, proceed as follows:


Unplug the coffee machine from the mains and let it cool down completely.


You can now use normal cleaning agents such as washing-up liquid and a dishcloth. Be careful with caustic or abrasive agents: oven cleaner, grill spray, scouring milk or pot sponges would damage the surface.
