Childhood Trauma Article on DS

There's a good article on DS by Susan Quinn about Acute Childhood Trauma and how it affects people severely throughout their lives.
We should all dedicate ourselves to the cause of protecting children from abuse, and support law enforcement and community organizations who work to stop this crime.  Just today, someone spotted an infant in a locked car in the Walmart parking lot that I pass by on the way to Whole Foods Market.  The poor kid was sweating like crazy and screaming his head off.
They called 911 and a deputy arrived, got into the car and rescued the child.  He was OK, but a few minutes more and he might have died.  In our climate, it only takes minutes for the temp in a closed car to reach deadly temps.  The child was placed in the custody of another family member and the father is likely to face serious charges.

oh Richie, that is terrible, just shows how we should keep a look out. A very similar thing happened here, when a mother left her three children in a car with a window only a little open, to simply \'pop\' into a shop where she only thought she would be a few minutes. The children were crying for help and a passerby called the police - it wouldnt have been long before the worst happened. It went to court and the mother was let off with a years probation and a parenting course, she was a single mum and was devestated that she had done that. So justice was done and the woman helped, which was a good outcome. xxx

I was discovered to be suffering, much later in life, from the severe bombing I experienced during the war as a very tiny child, not able to be aware of what was happening. I had always from a young child suffered from chlaustrophobia and agorophibia later on, though I was a resilient happy child, so this was unusual. When my doctor referred me to a cognitive behaviourial therapist to endeavour to lower my blood pressure, she discovered this had effected me - brilliant, as I was able to understand and start to recover really properly, though I had in fact managed this for years since a years ago breakdown. Didnt take my bp down though!!!...xx

I agree, Richie. Children do not have a voice. WE are their voice. Hugs, Linda

I\'m a total supporter of caring for children. They are gifts, put in our care and the fact that people abuse and/or neglect them, just makes me physically sick!

You are right! We all need to advocate for children and their rights, as they are so small and have no voice. The Casey Anthony incident/tragedy is still high and heavy on my mind. God will avenge this child. I believe that!

Thanks for the \"heads up\" on the article by Dr. Quinn! I\'ll be sure to check it out!!

How dare some creature dig up your stuffs!!! You\'re gonna have to sit outside with a 12 guage shotgun and protect your property. Of course it could have been a couple of your cats?? NAH, prolly not!! LOL.

Have a great day, Richie!

I believe that chicken wire is on this earth for a reason, Darla...lol. I replanted my ruined containers with fresh soil and seed, then put little chicken-wire hats on the pots.

What strikes me about the whole issue of child abuse is the way it has such permanent effects on people throughout their lives. They go through their lives struggling with addiction, emotional torment, and relationship failures...not realizing that these problems have their roots in those early years of their lives they can barely remember.

I heard my father say to someone that children don\'t remember what happens to them in their early years. I was just a kid, and I don\'t know the context, but now I know how wrong he was about that. I certainly do remember some of those bad things that happened in that house where I grew up, and they haunt me still.

I remember the emotion of fear...I was afraid of the world as a whole. When I tried to talk to people, I would stutter and shake. I remember looking in the mirror and thinking how profoundly disgusting and ugly I looked, and I remember wishing I could die and end the mess that was my life.

No child should grow up in a hell world like that, we must protect children from the twisted people who abuse them simply because they can\'t defend themselves.

I have been camping and just caught up on your entries.

I always had a nurse who worked in the emergency dept of a hospital for CARES (a childrens advocacy groups) come and talk to my psychology students about abuse. The more people understand the signs the better they can be at reporting suspected abuse.

I\'m glad someone called for help for the child you described. So often we feel like we have to mind our own business and we don\'t reach out to help. The nurse I mentioned was retiring but still gave her time to train police officers in dealing with abusive situations.

I have a friend who works with kids in elementary school who have trouble with reading. She has the most heartbreaking stories to tell about some of the kids she works with. One kid has severe burns all over his body from punishment, etc.; another told her his mom is looking for a new boyfriend to take care of them (and we know what some \"boyfriends\" are capable of - the ones who come and go in and out of people\'s lives). All I could do was think how good it is that they have this one teacher who loves them and a bright spot in their day to be with her. Thinking about the other stuff just breaks my heart.

carry on,
katy

Yes children are precious beings. Blessings to this earth and it is our jobs as adults to protect them. We had some sad stories down here of 2 kids playing hiding go seek in the boot of a car in summer and one died. Another that was terribly sad was a busy working mum who forgot that her 2 year daughter was in the car and was thinking she was at day care or with her ex and jumped out of the car and went inside and then it dawned on her that she had left her in the car but it was too late. I felt so sorry for this mother as it was just an accident. Her mind was too busy. It can happen, all humans make errors. I\'m talking about errors were they don\'tintend to hurt and ern\'t even conscious of what they\'ve done. When you walk into a shop and leave your kid in the car you are making a conscious decision. It\'s illegal here to even leave dogs in the car with the windowns up. Yeh I don\'t like hearing about about little ones being hurt or taken etc. Makes you wonder what is wrong with this world. Blessings, Jodixoxo.
