Child of Divorce My DOI - None Other Has Ever Known
I am a child of divorce... my parents remarried and both of their new spouses had children from previous marriages etc, etc, etc, (I hope you've seen the musical The King and I with Yul Brenner and Deborah Kerr if not I highly recommend it). Anyhoo long story short I finally declared independence when I was 20 and told both my mother and my father I would no longer participate in their war against each other... I didn't word it like that... I told them that as long as I could remember I had always felt that when I was with my mom I couldn't say anything good about my dad nor when with my dad could I say anything good about my mom... I told them I had never had any say in so much of what had happened but that was ending... They had met, decided they wanted to marry, have children, decide they didn't like each other, get divorced, meet and marry other partners, have more children, etc, etc, etc... I told them that in the future I intended to look at it that I had 2 moms and 2 dads and that I was luckier than most kids... so that was that... The reason all of this is important is that my story is about my stepfather. So it was December of 1976 the same year my daughter was born... she was born September 9, 1976... Anyway my stepfather Jake was in the hospital in ICU. He was desperately ill and I was very sad and afraid. I went to the hospital chapel to pray. I asked the Lord that if it was his will that my stepdad would live, but if it was not would he help me bear the pain. (Even now after all these years telling this makes me cry. I cry for me because I loved/love him and I miss him.) I was sitting there and suddenly it was if my stepdad was sitting beside me on my right side and he was singing! He and I had sung together so many times. He was singing "In The Garden". He didn't start at the beginning.. he sang, "and He walks with me and He talks with me and He tells me I am his own and the joy we share as we tarry there none other has ever known... I knew then without a doubt in my mind that God had told me my stepdad was going to die... more importantly He had told me that my stepdad would be going to heaven and that he would be with Jesus and that my stepdad would share in a joy like none other has ever known. I have always been so grateful that God loved me enough to come to me in a way I couldn't fail to understand. I have also believed ever since that moment that while when my loved ones die I cry it is for me I cry because I miss them but I do not cry for them... by the way I left the chapel and returned to the ICU waiting room... when I got there my mom told me that they had just told her that dad's heart rate had went up a bit... mom was hopeful perhaps his situation was getting better... I had to tell mom what had happened in the chapel... I had hardly finished telling her when the nurse came to get us as dad's heart rate and body temperature were plummeting... We went in with him and within moments he was gone... As I said I cry for me... I cried so hard the dr wanted to give me a sedative but I refused... I knew even then I cried for me not for him... I still cry but I know... Even for my daughter although its very hard this time I do believe she is in heaven. I found a workbook she had worked on where she talked about an increasing awareness of a higher power - God, and she did write that in over higher power, and her awareness that he was there for her... If only we'd had more time... but now she has all eternity to know and love the Lord... Its hard but it does help me and I hope it will help you.
