Chickery

The world of women is still mysterious and full of petty, pointless cruelty to my personal senses. My world has been populated by mostly men for 58 years. In the 60s I wasn't allowed to know a crescent wrench from a box wrench, but I could fix just about anything with kitchen utensils and bobby pins. I earned the lion's share of my career income through engineering and construction. I birthed only sons. My appearance is androgynous enough that I can pass for a man by simply altering my costume a bit. Androgynous features do well in either costume set. I know as much about salons and shopping as the lovers of salons and shopping typically know about a cam shaft.
Of course there are women in my life. Five sisters and a social bevy of acquaintances. My daughter-in-law is the first one to get me to any of the showers, etc. Or, should I say, her husband? My son. Of course he is not invited to the lady half of the proceedings, but his wedding was vitally important to him. The birth of his first son is even more so.
I never was much of a lady, but my mothering instincts are fierce! So are my mating instincts. It has been 33 years since my strip joint wedding. Primal instincts go far beyond social customs.
And so, I fumbled my way through my first set of church wedding plans. I am preparing for my first baby shower. Can't I just fix the new Mama's car?
Sigh. The sacrifices we make for our children, both adult and grand.
