Chardonnay 2018 Western Australia
The Wine Front – A blend of chardonnay and pinot noir from Tasmania’s Coal River Valley, this shows citrus and yeasty/ bready characters on the nose and palate, with a fresh, crisp finish. Enjoy by itself or with fresh oysters, smoked salmon or creamy chicken dishes. The word ‘Pazza’ in Italian is the feminine version of CRAZY. Fittingly, this is my wild fermented, preservative-free, unfined, unfiltered, Riesling sourced from the dry grown Watervale Peglidis vineyard. This wine is oxidatively handled and fermented in a blend of stainless steel and fifteen-year-old French oak barriques for 12 months. This slightly off-dry style has savoury qualities that show that Riesling can indeed come in many different shapes and sizes.
Hand picked grapes were gently whole pressed to seasoned French oak barrels using free-run juice only. A high solids, wild fermentation followed, pierro chardonnay 2018 giving the wine texture and complexity. The wine then underwent Malo-lactic fermentation with weekly batonage for 6 months before bottling.
Classic Watervale, with lime-splice-cordial notes streaming along a fine beam of acidity and talcy grippiness. During 150 years of wine making, Seppelt Wines has built a reputation of innovation and dedication to quality. The Seppelt approach is to harness the strength and characteristics of each region and create varietally and regionally expressive wines. The fruit for NGERINGA Chardonnay is planted on an easterly facing slope at 380m above sea level on a soil of sandy loam over clay. The top of the vineyard has views over Lake Alexandrina and the mouth of the Murray, which make themselves known on summer evenings with a strong cooling breeze despite daytime temperatures.
Dominated aromas of perfumed white flowers and white stone fruits. Light and lively on the palate, displaying attractive inner-mouth perfume and sneaky concentration to its white stone fruit and botanical herb flavors. A complex, perfumed nose of citrus and fresh nectarines balanced by toasty french oak and a savoury cashew barrel ferment character.
A touch of French oak adds almond bread and savoury undertones which will develop further with cellaring. Richland Moscato is light yellow with a green hue and displays a pungent nose of rose petal and orange blossom. The palate has well balanced sweetness with grapey sweet fruit flavours of mangos and...
Incredible intensity, inward concentration, a knife edge of acidity in finely wrapped layers of toastiness, marzipan, brioche with a sleek, lean profile of green apple and citrus. Aside its precision, it’s gorgeous to drink, refreshing the palate with each sip, leaving lingering detail of the presence of the wine. The medium-bodied palate shows the purity of the region with creamy stone fruit flavours balanced with zippy fresh acidity. Elder Hall Sparkling Chardonnay Pinot Noir is delicious easy drinking sparkling wine blended from the classic champagne grape varietals of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. It is lively and fresh with lifted citrus and stone fruit aromas complemented by a creamy texture and crisp finish. With a background in pharmacy and medicine, owner and winemaker Justin Ardill saw an opportunity to indulge his passion for wine by purchasing a small parcel of 12 acres of vineyards in Watervale in 1993.
There is a fair degree of phenolic here, and the wine has the body and fleshiness to cope with that. It's not a finesse wine but a full-bodied chardonnay with a stack of flavour. The wine has beautiful stone-fruit and ripe pear characters on the nose with some citrus undertones. The palate shows a tight mid-palate with flinty characters that lead into a complex and juicy finish. Good balance from the toasty oak character that compliments the fruity structure. This wine drinks very well on release but will develop and evolve over the next 5-7 years.
Upon fermenting to sugar dryness, the wines were fined & clarified. The oak & tank batches were blended & left in tank to allow integration & equilibrium of the final wine. Bianca by KT is made from Vermentino grown by the Koerner family in the hamlet of Leasingham in the Clare Valley. Vermentino is a white grape variety that originally heralds from the island of Sardinia in Italy and is enjoyed for its resistance to dry and warm conditions and its high natural acidity. This wine is created using wild fermentation techniques, meaning 100% indiginous yeast and partially fermented in older French oak barrels. The palate unravels layers of lemon curd and yellow peach skins.
Yattarna is the result of one of the most comprehensive, focused and highly publicised wine development projects ever conducted in Australia. The aspiration and independence of mind across generations of Penfolds winemakers inspired the ambition to create a white wine that would set a standard for ultra-fine Australian chardonnay. If you want to try old Chardy, the trick is to buy a case and drink a bottle a year. When it is tasting awesome, drink the rest of the case fairly quickly.
