catching up and crashing
It's 3:06 am. I am weak and exhausted, but in too much pain to sleep, so I'll type. I can't think clearly enough to catch up on every body's journals, sorry. I'll try later this week.
While my mom was in the hospital, we found out Tim's mom has lung cancer ...... again. But her radiation treatments are going well, and Tim has three brothers who live near her and they are taking care of her. So far, things are going well in Maine. Tim's 78 year-old father is splitting wood in preparation for winter.
Thank you all for praying for my mom. We are still battling with her about her diet, etc, but she is beginning to accept hard facts.
Message to Darla: There's no way I'm turning your brother loose with a lawn mower in my yard. We have a 4-acre yard with lots of trees, and there's a a rocky bluff where my yard ends and the right-of-way for the road begins. Your brother would nose-dive my mower right off that bluff and crash into a school bus!!!!! My nieces might be on that bus! He'd probably even run over one of my dogs on the way over the bluff. Yeah, he'd probably run over my Great Pyrenees and maybe some of Tim's grape vines and fruit trees ----- it wouldn't be pretty. LOL! If the grass in my yard gets too high, I'll just open some gates and invite my dad's and my brother's cows over for lunch!
Message to Max: Seriously, I think firearms are necessary where I live. We live in a very rural area and our county ranks 4th in the nation for meth production. There are a lot of robberies. My mother's house was broken into and robbed 4 times back when she was still working. The crooks actually stole her air conditioning unit! But they were finally caught ----- weird story about how they were caught --- my family as a whole is crazy!!! Our house was broken into while we we preparing to move into it.
We have coyotes, bobcats, foxes, and poisonous snakes (rattlesnakes, copperheads and water moccasins), among other things. A couple of years ago, our dogs treed a bobcat that was after our chickens. My husband shot the bobcat, and it now hangs on our wall. Tim also found a rattlesnake in the chicken coop and he killed it with a shovel! My mom, (bless her heart, she can't shoot worth a hoot) came home one day and there was a rattlesnake on the front porch underneath the door. She took my dad's pistol out of the car and actually shot at the doggone snake and hit it!
I have personally killed 3 rattlesnakes, one water moccasin, and a multitude of copperheads. I have the hide off of a 4'10.75" rattlesnake hanging on a wall (I wanted to have that snake mounted, but I couldn't because I blew most of it's head off!). I tried to deep fry one of the rattlesnakes that I shot. It tasted good, but it was as tough as leather. I talked to some older friends ....... if I get me another rattlesnake, I'll know how to cook it next time!!!
I really don't like it when I find critters in the chicken pen, or in the horse feed container in the shed ...... so I have also shot racoons, skunks, opossums, and groundhogs --- they will all kill and eat chickens. A couple of weeks ago, Tim was mowing the yard and he ran over a copperhead with the lawn mower. My dad killed a copperhead yesterday evening. My dad and my brother have also shot several coyotes and wild dogs that were stalking and killing their calves.
I'm a backwoods country farm girl. (Actually, I'm a half-breed. My dad is a western Kentucky redneck and my mom is a hillbilly from the mountains of eastern Kentucky!) And, yeah, my lifestyle is quite a bit different from today's average woman, but can you understand now why I feel that I need a firearm? I love my life ........... love the space and freedom. I'd shrivel up and die in a city.
On top of everything else, I have to watch out for Darla's brother now!!! If that man comes heading towards my house, I'll have to stop him before he gets to my yard!!!! Awww, I won't shoot HIM! I may have to shoot the lawn mower, though!

Have no fear! My brother stays HERE! LOL..that rhymes!! I don\'t think I\'d want to live out amongst all those snakes! I can\'t shoot fer nothing! Then again, I haven\'t had any reason to practice shooting. We keep a gun in the house for personal protection. The NE is a drug den. There are robberies on every corner, at every deli, every day. We live in a very busy Metropolitan area. Safety first. Hopefully we\'ll never have to use the gun!

Glad Tim\'s mom\'s treatments are going well!! Cancer does come back! It\'s a lifetime battle! I hope she does well with the radiation!! As far as your mom goes, I know she\'ll eventually catch on to what she has to do to maintain good health. It\'s a learning experience. We women aren\'t all that good at dealing with change when it doesn\'t suit us.......we bad!
I hope you are able to get some rest. Worry not. I\'ll keep the lawn mower life destroyer here in Jersey. We\'re about to take our mower in today or tomorrow for fixin!! He has good intentions, but huge tree stumps can\'t stop him when he\'s in a hurry. He might do well at running over a bunch of Copperheads for ya though!! LOL..worry not. I\'ll keep him here! xoxo
We lived on a farm in an old farmhouse when my son was a baby and I was raising my husband\'s daughter from his first marriage.I sent Nicole in to run a bath, she was only 7yrs at the time.She came running out with her eyes bulging, screaming that there was a huge black snake in the bath tub.Sure was huge, it was a lethal red belly black.I was alone with the kids, my husband had driven to town, so all I could do was lock it in the bathroom.When he returned he killed it with a shovel.We had another on the verandah a few days later that disappeared.Then a third one.After that we decided to move out.Here in Nth Qld we have Death Adders and Taipan snakes, very quick and deadly, especially the Taipan.Fortunately I haven\'t seen any yet, I live in the suburbs.The one thing that is really freaky here in the rainforest are bird eating spiders, they are HUGE.I don\'t like spiders in general, but these ones are ridiculous.I have only seen one and that was enough . I\'m glad it\'s morning right now otherwise I would be creeping myself out.Never seen a rattlesnake or a copperhead or a coyote or even a fox
My husband is a pretty good shot, he used to belong to the pistol club south of Cairns.He sold all of his guns several yrs back.He used to practice with a lot of police officers.He said a lot of them were pretty bad shooters.We live in a safe area here, compared to other parts of this City.Hopefully it will stay that way, although our stupid government is trying to bring in a new budget which will disadvantage the lower economic area and could encourage more breakins as people get desperate.So my husband may consider having a gun again.So it depends on where one lives and individual cicumstances etc when it comes to needing protection.

Praying for Tim\'s mom and your mom, too. I hope you get rested up from all the running around you had to do when your mom was in the hospital. Please, please, please take a picture of the rattlesnake hide on your wall and post it here. I have to see that thing!

OK, Di freaked me out about the bird eating spiders. I grew up in Louisiana... lots of bugs and critters down in New Awlins. But HELLO! Eeek!
I love hearing about your adventures. :) you\'re one tough cookie! I\'ve only shot a gun twice. A shotgun at my uncles farm in Indiana and hand gun with husband at range. He\'s a fires arms instructor for his department. He\'s told me how to use the gun here if ever needed but they scare me. Guess cuz I don\'t know enough about them.
