CATARACT SURGERY
I saw several were wondering about cataract surgery. I had mine a couple of years ago, but if I remember correctly the surgery is usually covered. I did opt to get the bifocal lenses because I did not want to go back to wearing glasses.
If you want lense implants you do have to pay for that. It is expensive... $2500 per lense so $5000 for both eyes. I had extra money at the time and felt that was something I did want to do for myself. I am glad I did.
My SIL said that if you get original cataract surgery with Medicare it will cover cost of surgery and lens back on your cornea. She had no cost for hers.
We are in PA so I am not sure if other states differ, but I think this is how it works.
PS You will be amazed at the difference when you do have to get it done. Things go from grey and dismal to so bright and clear again.

not true for me the internal lens are covered by my insurance and also they will give me a free pair of glasses afterwards....I just called my medicare advantage plan today.....I do have a deductible on the surgery though. In network $250...out of network they pay 80%
God, that is expensive. My late ex father in law had his done and he did not pay any where near that amount. He had to pay for the lens but not the surgery. I think it was about a couple hundred dollars per eye. Glad you got them done. Hugs.
Original Medicare pays for cataract surgery when the better eye meets their requirements so your worst eye gets worser and worser. I have google searched this and there are a lot of options today and the surgery is quick and easy. My cataracts are the cloudy lens type and I can't see close up at all now without glasses. I am unsure if Medicare Advantage plans have to follow Original Medicare rules. But I am a few years away from cataract surgery myself. My sister needed the surgery like a few years ago but refuses. And then she insists on driving and we have a big argument because the worst vision driver sits in the back seat. HA HA. My sister has a screw loose. And she claims her eye doctor said her cataract problem is not fixable but sister is lying, this is absolutely not true. I live in a big city and there are all kinds of options.
I don't think I clarified myself. If you go with normal lens, insurance should pay for that. The only reason I had to pay (and SO much was because I got special bifocal lenses. They are what was expensive..
Hasty, you are right, your sister is clearly lying to you because she didn't like the options her dr gave. All I can say is if you go with her, be sure to buckle up in the back and wear your shades. (and say a prayer or two) LOL
