Budget Edition: How to properly store your weed

 

Correct marijuana storage can help protect your stash. Improperly stored marijuana can quickly dry out, losing potency and flavor – or worse, mold can grow on your cannabis, rendering it dangerous to consume.

 

Whether you grow your own marijuana and need to store large amounts for a year or more or are just looking to keep the buds you pick up from your local dispensary fresh and flavorful between visits, proper marijuana storage can keep your buds at their best.

While direct sunlight is the most degrading to marijuana flower, even indirect light can cause a loss of potency. For that reason, light proof marijuana storage is critical to preserving your cannabis. When storing your marijuana, you are ideally looking for a cool, dark, and dry place.

Many cannabis consumers and growers prefer opaque or dark-colored glass weed containers to reduce exposure to light.

You will want to keep your marijuana in an airtight jar to minimize air exchange and changes in relative humidity, which should be kept near 62 percent. 

 

More exposure to oxygen in the air can cause marijuana to lose potency through the degradation of THC to CBN, as well as a loss of flavor from degraded terpenes.  

Stay away from plastic: Plastic can leach chemicals or carry a static charge that can attract trichomes, which contain THC, terpenes and other cannabinoids, the Ontario Cannabis Store (OCS) advises. If the cannabinoids are stuck to the bag, there are fewer in the marijuana. Meanwhile, an airtight jar with a rubber seal along with a cool, dry location is the recommended storage for cannabis, the OCS suggests. This is the best way to maintain the dried cannabis plant’s properties.

 

Stay away from the refrigerator: While it is dark and cool, the refrigerator is not the best place for cannabis. Keep it out of the refrigerator. A lot of people tend to put it in the fridge or the freezer, but the fluctuations in humidity and temperature can actually increase the chance of mould and mildew to the flower.

 

Stay away from tobacco humidors: If you want to keep your cannabis from roommates or those under-age, a locked wooden box would work. “What you don’t want to do is use a tobacco humidor,” Brown said. The oils from the cedar wood would impact the flavour of the cannabis. He suggested a locked box with small glass containers separating strains if security is a concern.
