Brotherly Feud By Email

Saturday, March 14, 2009 Let me try making everything easier by printing exactly what I wrote Lee (my brother), and then his response to me: "Dear Lee,   Following our counseling session this past Monday, Dr. Martin, Dale, and I were somewhat unsure about something you said near the latter part of our session. I cannot give you the exact quotes, but I can paraphrase three of them. Please let me know if these are accurate.   1. After the session before this one, you asked me a question and I said that I could not answer it until I did some processing and spoke with Dr. Martin.   2. During the session this week, you made a comment about my not answering questions quickly, and said that Barbara (his wife), and your two daughters, said the same thing.   3. Just before you left the session Monday, you said that you were ashamed to be seen in public with me.   Thanks for your help." Now, here is his reply: "Hi, Jim--       I guess I shouldn't say anything at the end of a session, but the middle doesn't seem to work a lot better.  Let me work backwards, taking these up 3 to 1.   3.  Nope. I didn't say at the end of the meeting that I was ashamed to be seen in public with you.  Something like this did come up much earlier, when I was explaining my childhood ambivalence about caring for you.  You may remember I invoked Boystown: "He isn't heavy, he's my brother."  I added to that this (speaking metaphorically): You were heavy.  The two things together were meant to indicate divided feelings: on the one hand, love and caring; on the other, resentment and embarrassment.  I was talking about your peeing on me.  Remember?  I added, in response to something Loraine asked, that I had largely but not entirely gotten over the embarrassed part, because I had grown and changed, learning more about  people with disabilities in general, learning more about many other forms of difference, and of course there is no longer anything to resent.   2.  "Quickly" was never the issue.  I was telling you that you often refuse to respond directly--openly, forthrightly--to things, and this is, as I did say, something that Barb and my daughters have observed.  (I should of course leave them all out of it.  Sorry.)  You did tell me after the meeting before the last that you couldn't tell me what you felt about something until after you had talked to Loraine.  In general, when pressed to give an opinion or to say what you think or to explain what you feel, you often side-step.  You say things like "I don't know yet"; "I don't want to say because I don't like to talk before I think"; "I'm not sure"; "I'll have to think about that."  These, too, are rough paraphrases.  You seem afraid of offending, so afraid that you evade whatever the truth is, or so it seems to me.  I said (no doubt too quickly at the end) that it was hard to get an authentic response from you, a response that was not filtered by your careful calculation, not shaped by consultation with your team.  You are extremely guarded.  The result, for me anyway, is that you sometimes seem unreal.    1,  This is more or less accurate.  I wish I could remember exactly what the topic was, but I can't.  It was a question about what you thought and/or felt.  You did say you couldn't tell me until you had talked it over with Loraine.   This struck me then, and still strikes me now, as some kind of weird refusal to be yourself without guidance, or perhaps approval, from others.   I said in our very first joint session that I thought you were afraid (needlessly afraid) of crossing anyone, of annoying anyone, of offending anyone.  I cited then, as an example, your behavior in the hospital (I had just visited you there a short time before).  It seemed clear that you couldn't bring yourself to complain, even though you were being mistreated.  I imagine that some of this is related to your fear of anger.  I am happy to explore any or all of this next time (preferably not at the very end of a session--my fault).   I hope this helps whatever it is that you are up to.  I'm interested in having us understand each other better and in improving our relationship through such understanding.  Above all, I want you to have a better life.    Email is an awkward medium; it is hard to be precise in a quick note, so please don't get hung up on any one word or formulation.  Do we have another meeting scheduled?  Do you want another meeting?   Love, Lee     PS   Since Loraine and Dale seem to share your confusions, perhaps you should forward this email to them.  It might help." After that I then sent the following message: "Dear Lee,   Thanks for your email. We do not yet have another meeting scheduled. I suspect Dale wants to have just one a month. Do you have any special reason for thinking that I would not want another meeting? That question sounded somewhat peculiar.   I'll let you know when something is scheduled.   Love,   Jim" This was his reply: "Nope.  I didn't mean anything special.  It was just a round-about way of wondering how you were liking this process.  Have a good weekend. Lee" I fired off one more message to him:"The process doesn't really matter as long as it gets me where I need to be.     Jim" I also sent copies of our emails to Dale and Dr. Martin, as well as this: "I initiated some email with Lee today, and am sending copies to both of you. There is nothing I can add except to say that I still feel Lee said that he was ashamed to be seen with me in public. I guess there is no way I can prove what I heard him say, but I have nothing to gain by lying.   I will see both of you next week.   Sincerely,   Jim"  Did I confuse anyone? If so, let me know.

I\'ve always thought that anything worth writing, is worth printing. With that in mind, why not put the draft of your fantasy response to my brother here? (I have to admit that I\'m kind of curious as to what you wrote anyway.)

If his ears burn, he can always get some Aloe Vera! LOL!

Hugs,
Jim

WHAT FOLLOWS IS A DRAFT OF MY FANTASY LETTER - INCOMPLETE:

* * *

*Dear Jims Brother,*

I am very dismayed at the way you have responded to your brother here.

Your brother was a victim of sexual abuse over the course of many years. Somehow, in the span of your existence on this earth, you have never learned what sexual, verbal and emotional abuse can do to a childs development. All your answers here I bet would sound supportive to you in your own mind. How convenient. Then you dont have to really face what your brother went through that way.

This is about a man whose life taught him that people in the world are like ponds beginning a spring melt. Some sections are still solid, and can be trusted to support a souls weight.

But some sections are thin and weak, and use a false appearance that will swallow a malleable soul whole upon the slightest tread.

The only area I may believe from you here is, that you are not ashamed NOW to be seen in public with your brother. However, you HAD been talking about THE PAST. You have not yet learned that, YOU CANNOT SHIFT GEARS SO QUICKLY with someone facing a melting pond (and who also wears hearing aids). You have not considered that there are simultaneous physical body and emotional responses for a victim having to delve into the past, a past that was, frankly, horrific. I feel its possible that Jim was still thinking about the past, when you made your statement about the present, assuming that your brother was keeping up.

I dont know. I DO know Jim is my friend, and Im with him either way.

I dont know if you will ever be capable of understanding that Jim has NO weird refusal to be himself. Because, he never got to learn who himself is. Hes only been doing the best he can for most of his life. A best he had to formulate without much help or nurturing. And NONE OF IT his fault.

Your brother needs and DESERVES TIME to think about any answers he gives because hes only now confronting his past. Hes confronting it without using numbing crutches, a terrifying thing to attempt. For you to put him on what YOU think is an appropriate schedule to answer a question only serves to highlight your lack of grasp of what your brother went through. What he is doing is hard work. Looking back at the most personal kind of offenses that can be perpetrated on a person. Your responses suggest that it should be more simple for Jim to answer, and move on. Jim is trying to figure things out amidst a fluctuating torrent of bodily and emotional feelings and memories, so if his best answer at the moment is I dont know, then thats the perfect answer for HIM, and YOULL just have to take it!

You are not in charge of this sir.

Please mind your place. To Jim, even YOU are a melting pond.

You must find patience, and practice it.

And, I just thought YOU would like to know how it feels to have so many observations and comments aimed at YOU, since you were so generous with the you-speak with your brother. And phrases like Nope, you are extremely guarded, You seem afraid of offending you were afraid (needlessly afraid). I hope this helps whatever it is that you are up to.

YOU must LEARN that victims of past abuse ARE guarded, ARE afraid. And it is NOT NEEDLESS, as it serves to protect them from memories of being manipulated and overpowered and threatened. Because if theyve kept it all a buried secret, as Jim has, it adds many locks to its doors over the years. And what Jim is up to is going to take time, and YOU cant change that.

YOU dont get to decide that how Jim is doing things needs to be different, or changed. YOU didnt come out and say it, but I felt like there were implications throughout.

JIM gets to decide. He gets to decide that he needs help with an answer, or to not answer at all. Or to tell you to sod off. JIM DECIDES.

Oh, and whatever I\'m off base about - hash it out here. I\'ll take the hit. My fingers just kind of fired this off and I wasn\'t thinking it through.

No fear. Just explore this out loud, \'k?

On your terms.

Gosh, Weebs is goooooood. Holy moly.

Jim, I agree with all she says in her letter. Do you? How are you feeling?

I noticed that in my situation, communication was so difficult because my sisters and I had such a different reality. They didn\'t see my brother as the rapist that I did. Your brother is lacking in sooooooo much information and it\'s really doing a spin on him. He\'s angry, I suspect. I can hear anger in my sibling\'s voices when they talk to me and I can\'t take it. It seems misplaced.

I really don\'t like his letter one bit. I don\'t think his clarification would make me feel any better. It would only reinforce my feelings that he is abusive. You are right to feel that way, Jim.

You could try and explain your story to him. You could let him read your story if you really want understanding and support from him. I personally don\'t think he deserves to read it though.

Please hang in there. We\'re all here for you and WE GET IT. Your brother is too wrapped up in his own problems. Problems that I suspect don\'t even compare to what you have endured.

Big hugs.

Yeah Sam, nice chime in, and thanks for the compliment.

Something I would like to point out though.

Both of these men had the same mother/parents. So neither of them had the best teacher.

It\'s pretty much been established that their mother was a few colors short of a rainbow...

I can see how it would look that Jim\'s brother is abusive and wrapped up in his own problems. That\'s who he was BOUND to become.

But Jim has also said that about himself.

And, finding out that a sibling has been abused, brother hasn\'t been in possession of that info very long, and was/is a drinker, and may have his own problems getting to grips in a \'timely fashion\' with it all.

If any our our sibs or best friends told us that after years of keeping it a secret, and we hadn\'t been there ourselves, how would we react and feel?

I\'m not defending. I\'m trying to see the WHOLE picture. And if Jim could step back and see his brother as a product of their mother too, it might help him not have the physical reactions or to feel like he might be the only one who is.

Just hashing out loud here........

***Stepping back and seeing the whole picture DOES NOT mean having to put up with mistreatment/abuse/rudeness!

But it WILL give you permission to formulate the appropriate response.

Wow, there is smoke coming out of my pc screen.
Man, I wouldn\'t be afraid of anything if I had Weebs backing me.
Lucky man, there Jim. You have true and loyal friends.

Ok...no way I can top any of the above.

I would like to know where your brother received his degree in psychiatry or psychology ? No degree ?? Then he must just be a smartass riding a very shaky high horse. Such a long way to fall for a man with such a sensitive ego.
Sigh.
I am still so freaken angry that he had the audacity to diagnose you and your behaviors with his mention of your \" fear of offending. \" Obviously your brother has no such hesitation.

\" I am happy to explore any or all of this next time (preferably not at the very end of a session--my fault). \"
What a super freak. Someone should mention that his place in the food chain is nowhere NEAR where he thinks it is.
Omnipotent little god. What a creature.
Yeah, he is your brother and you love him...but I don\'t.

\"I\'m interested in having us understand each other better and in improving our relationship through such understanding. \"
Does he realize he would have to go into DEEEEEEP personal individual therapy before that can happen?
He lives in a delusional state of illusion which is home to the pompous and cowardly, not to mention misinformed.

\" You are extremely guarded. \"
Good God ! I wonder why ?

\" The result, for me anyway, is that you sometimes seem unreal. \"

Is this guy \" fur real ?? \"

Does this man realize he uses words, phrasings and anything else he can get his hands on to keep a huge distance between the surrounding world and his real self ?

Ok, I can\'t go on with this anymore.
I think we should set your brother and my sister up in a room together to discuss their individual \" uniqueness. \"

Then I wanna \" pee \" on him, too. No offense to you.

Finally, I would like Weebs, Sam and myself to take him out to lunch after the next family therapy session.

People that have a serious threat of drowning because they hold their noses so high in the air, really, really frost my padorkas.

I do apologize to you. Just couldn\'t help myself.

Hi Jim,

I have to say I did not like your brother\'s phrases either, but I have to say no matter how much he feels you need to change about you. He has to learn that change is something you are gaming for through therapy. You have decide what changes you want to make and give yourself time to make them. If it took years to do the damage...it is not going to go away in one session. Jim all I can say say here is you have to change the things you need to change in your own time and at your own pace.

As or his comment of you being guarded, of course you are. You should be he is your brother, but has hurt you many times in many ways. He should know that after those events it takes trust to let \"guard\" down. This takes time, hard work, and courage. People need to realize that nothing is done in one day alone. I wish you luck, and all the support that I can give you is here. Try to stay positive.

I liked Weebs fantasy response, wish it could be a real response, I have not been through enough in my life to comment in depth here, but I am very glad that Weebs and Good God and the others are here supporting you when you need it most.

I am extremely overwhelmed (that is the understatement of the year) for all of the positive support that everyone here has been giving me. Looking throughout my past life, I simply cannot remember when a group of people has helped me so much. For all you know, I may be a serial killer, but you have taken the chance to believe in me, and have given me your unconditional support. I feel indebted to each and every one of you.

Sam is right about Weebs letter writing abilities -- Holy Moly! If she was mad at me, and sent me a letter such as the draft she wrote to my brother (Lee), I would probably fall over dead. (That is one reason why I will not send that letter to Lee. I would prefer that he stay alive somewhat longer.)

As you can probably guess from the tone of his letter, Lee has caused me much pain throughout the years. I probably had some of it coming to me, but certainly not all of it.

We have both had problems, but I do not feel that Lee realizes it. I have had a problem with crack cocaine, for which he has said some of the cruelest things I have ever heard. He has now admitted that he has an alcohol problem, about which I have said almost nothing.

Lee and I, along with our sister (Alice) had the same parents. Each of us has gone through similar pain and suffering because of them. Alice was the first to get away from home, and she was followed by Lee. My father died in 1982, but I still lived with my mother until her death in 1994. Surprisingly to me, both Alice and Lee have admitted that I sustained the most abuse.

I am unsure as to what will happen between Lee and I now. Since I want to solve as many problems between us as I can, I am going to try to continue going to our counseling sessions as long as possible. I am not, however, going to permit Lee to walk all over me.
