Brake Repair - Safety First

There's a thin line between safe and hazardous driving, and a vehicle's brakes can make all the difference. Under ideal circumstances, a responsible driver would have their brakes checked regularly; however, many vehicle owners do not take these precautions until it is too late. Knowing some typical brake repair indicators can help prevent costly repairs, and ensure safe operation of the vehicle at all times.

Squealing is usually the first sign that brake repair is necessary. In fact, by the time the vehicle owner hears this tell-tale sign, the brake pads have already begun to wear down considerably. Brake pads come with a metal indicator tab that will run against the rotors when the pads have become too thin; this is what causes the squealing sound anytime the brakes are applied. Ideally, brake pads should be ten to twelve mm thick for proper operation of the brake system. Obviously, if the repairs are ignored, the squealing will persist and get worse. Additionally, the brakes will become less efficient, and require more time for the vehicle to stop.

Poor brake pads can also affect the rotors, which will become warped or scratched from too much metal to metal contact; because of this, many auto mechanics will recommend replacing the rotors along with the brake pads. However, if these repairs are made in a timely manner, the rotors will continue to be structurally sound, and replacement is not always necessary. Instead of completely replacing the rotors, resurfacing is less expensive than purchasing new rotors, but it is more effective for older vehicles that use heavier rotors. This involves using special equipment to shave some of the metal surface of the rotors to provide a more even finish. Unfortunately, resurfacing is less effective for newer cars, which carry lighter, slimmer rotors. Rotors are generally enduring, and damage is dependent upon driving frequency, habits, road types, and the quality of the parts.

Another repair symptom is brakes that "grab." This phrase means that the car pulls to one side when the brakes are applied. This could also indicate poor brake pads, as well as a number of issues including leaks within the system, worn rotors, or contaminated brake fluid. Many auto technicians specialize in brake repair, can can easily diagnose an issue that may not have an obvious fix.

The brake system is the most important aspect of safe vehicle operation. Poorly operating brakes cannot stop the vehicle efficiently, and will be a danger to other cars on the road. The best way to avoid costly brake repairs is to have an auto technician check the brakes often, at least every 15,000 miles. However, this may be more frequent for drivers in extreme conditions, which can have an effect on the parts within the system.
