Beyond Anxiety
January 2 through 9 the girl was in the hospital - inpatient at the mental hospital. When she was released, it was with instructions from the doctor to have the school lighten her stress as much as possible, and she started the after school program outpatient at the hospital.
Rather than follow the doctors instructions, the school pushed her into "hell week", a week long Mid-Term exam nightmare. Her stress level was through the roof, and she was unimaginable. She blew up each morning before school, each afternoon after school, upsetting her family and friends. I have never seen her so stressed out.
Apparently, however, she behaved herself at school and at the program.
But sometime during this week, someone used a downloaded texting program to send anonamous texts to all her friends, including her phone, which were so rude and frequent that they were reported to the police and the police officer from the school gave me a call to try to pin the "crime" on the girl.
Knowing her mood during the prior week, and not knowing that the police officer was referring to a "crime" (although it was stupid of me not to suspect that), I said I would not be surprised if it had been the girl. I really thought that she was referring to the arguments she had with a couple of her friends, not a blitz-texting campaign of "crime".
So, now my mentally ill, 15 year old daughter is facing "interregation" by the highly insensitive police woman that patrols the corridors of the high school, as part of the "School-to-Prison Pipeline", which targets minorities and children with disabilities and puts them into the criminal justice system rather than getting them the help that they need.
If she is charged with this "crime", and arrested, she will be taken out of her treatment, traumatized through jail and court appearances only to be ordered into treatment.
This police officer's limited investigative techniques and complete lack of sensitivity has already contributed to one mental breakdown for the girl, and I fear that should this be pursued, it will lead to a complete breakdown that will destroy the girl's life completely.
I have done some research on this "School-to-Prison Pipeline" and I have found a school that the girl could go to that has not jumped onto the looney-tunes bandwagon and has boasted a Positive Reinforcement Behavioral Program that I believe the girl would do well under. If I can manage to get the girl through this, I am going to move to get the girl transferred to the other school, even if it means driving her there and picking her up each day in order to do so.
Having a police officer patrolling our schools, shouting "It's a crime, It's a crime" (and she has done so both times that I have spoken with her) is such a travesty! According to my research, behavior that should be handled by the school's administration is being brought before the criminal justice system and children's lives are being ruined for it. Children are being tried and labeled as criminals for childish mistakes and behavior rather than taught to be better.
I pray that I can get the girl through this and that this horrible woman will not ruin her entire life based upon suspicion based upon the fact that she is mentally ill.
