Taiwan’s temples are busy, incense smoke-filled places of active worship. Visiting temples is one of the best things to do in Taipei during Chinese New Year, as they all remain open. Taiwan’s temples also host some of the country’s most impressive (and noisy!) festivals. The ones I mention in the “Taipei Teahouses” section of this article are the best tea shops I know. I’m afraid I can’t really give prices because they vary wildly according to the quality of the teas.

In a market where high mountain oolongs reign supreme , Oriental Beauty is refreshingly different. Alishan tea is usually around 40% oxidized, so it is light to medium in color. The tealeaves are usually rolled into dense little balls that unfold when you add hot water. It has a creamy mouthfeel that seems to coat the mouth, and a sweet, long-lasting aftertaste.

Taitung Forest Park is a lovely park and a perfect spot if you’re looking to get away from the city. While it’s true that Taitung temples leave something to be desired, at least when compared to those you find in Taipei, Tainan, or Kaohsiung, they’re not a totally worthless pursuit.
Even outside of the blossom seasons, it’s still worth going, the scenery is spectacular, as everywhere else around Taitung.
