As a critical trading post, Sibiu experienced frequent assaults, and the townspeople responded ingeniously. Leaving Romania we ride off the beaten track through forests and over the mountains into Hungary and its capital of Budapest where we have a well earned day off to explore. Visit the History Museum inside the Clock Tower, and climb the unusual, centuries-old covered staircase to the Church on the Hill, a lovely surviving example of the Gothic architecture of the Middle Ages. Sighisoara is also known as the 1431 birthplace of Vlad the Impaler, merciless warlord and fierce defender of Transylvania against the Ottoman Turks. Drive to Bran Village and visit the iconic Bran Castle, also known as Dracula’s Castle, a symbol of Transylvania. The walk continues at the base of the Piatra Craiului Mountains. It's an interesting contrast to the landscape of the previous day, as you traverse pastures, sheepfolds and woods. Scattered villages which seem to have not changed for centuries break up the landscape, while the surrounding mountains are a constant companion.
This wonderfully European town is known for its architecture and stunning views of the Carpathian Mountain range. If there’s no deal, you will need to get an International Driving Permit to be able to drive in some European countries as a visitor after the UK has left. Sinaia was a real gem We loved Sighisoara and the Saxon Church at Viscri. He has been instrumental in injecting new life into the area - buying several properties in the 12th-century Saxon village of Viscri, 250km north of Bucharest. He's also involved in several ecological farming projects and in the regeneration of the historic centre of neighbouring Sibiu city. The average temperature of the mine is around 10 Celsius degrees. After visiting Deva fortress and admiring the land of Transylvania from higher ground, it’s time to drive to the next stop or to find accommodation in Deva. If you visit in summer, make sure to bring a cap and water and comfortable walking shoes, as there is no shade and the sun is burning on most summer days. There is a soda machine next to the fortress, but there is little shade to hide from the sun.
