being open
I have found a lot of support from people at school. I was surprised to find some satisfied post-op people as well. They look and feel fantastic. They were surprised how openly I was talking about what I'm preparing for. One girl felt so embarassed when she first started. She said it felt good to talk to me, it was the first time she's spoken to someone in a public area about gastric bypass.
I guess I don't have the embarassment as much because I'm being told I have to get the procedure due to my internal organs are compacted (the reason I had to get an appendectomy this summer - my appendix contorted onto itself because of lack of space). It's not because I'm not physically active or have the typical comorbities associated with the procedure. I carry my weight surprisingly well, which has lead to the common reaction of surprise when I tell people I'm going for the surgery.
Anyways, I'm loving the support I've received so far, especially from such a variety of people. Makes me optimistic about this "adventure" I'm about to undergo.
