Been Busy Traveling
Hello Community, Friends and Whoever else,
Mickie and I have been traveling (by car) to Dallas about every 3 weeks to care for her father. He will be 90 on June 9th and suffers from memory problems. His driver's license was to be renewed...and Mickie, cleverly, suggested that they go to DMV before her father could shave or comb his care...and guess what...The DMV agents took one look at him and very tactfully refused him a license....Ahhh...my clever attorney wife...So we able to take his car keys away from him without an argument.
This last week we spent in Berkeley, CA celebrating my son's (Jeff) graduation from UC Berkeley with a Phd. in Anthropology (Middle East Studies and Arabic). Jeff's wife will graduate within the next two years with a Phd. in cancer research...I am so happy and proud of them.
We will spend the next several days in Chicago...Then off to Dallas for the 90th birthday. Then back to Chicago for a week then off to Portugal for two weeks.
I have PD...I am making the most of my life...Fight PD.

Joe it sounds like you are fighting PD and you are winning right now.. I wish you and your wife happy trails and a wonderful life together. Blessings!!
I wish I could travel like you do....but so happy that you can. You are correct, you have a very intellegent wife in the way she got the DMV to cancel her dads licence. My dad is 88 and all of my siblings and I are trying to get his keys too, but no success yet.
Keep up that good fight, travel all you can, and enjoy life to it\'s fullest. PD be damned.

Wow you travelin man you!!! Very very clever of your wife with the DMV situation... now you both know he is safe and not behind the wheel... and boy you surely must be proud of your son and his wife on their accomplishments... Enjoy your time in Dallas and the big birthday celebration... and very safe travels to you both on your trip to Portugal.. enjoy enjoy enjoy!!!! Thanks for your comments. I certainly appreciate your support. Yes, the car keys move was cool. We had tried to get his keys and he refused to give them up...despite his Dr. stating he should not drive.

We had a problem with my Dad and driving in his later years. The doctor told us he should not be driving. My Dad would not listen to us so we asked the doctor to tell him directly that he could not drive anymore. The doctor refused saying \"I can\'t do that - it would be like telling my grandpa\". So my sister told him his license was expiring and set up a drivers test with a friend at the DMV. When the friend got back from the test with my Dad he told my sister that he had made it really really hard, but dang if my Dad didn\'t pass everything he asked him to do. Then a couple weeks later after he backed into the garage door twice and ran a stop sign almost causing an accident, my sister took his keys away and told him they were lost. He was so mad at her for months, but eventually accepted the situation - sort of. Its really hard watching parents age and lose their independance. Your FIL is a lucky man to have you guys.

I think the loss of car keys is a terrible surrender of independence. I certainly understand the feelings of your father and my FIL.
I wonder how I react when it is \"suggested\" that I give up my driving rights. I am certain I will not respond kindly.

I\'m 56 and the dystonia in my right foot will prevent me from driving sooner rather than later. One of my biker buddies said,\"What\'s the big deal? Use your left foot!\" Hmmmm.
