been adrift and bereft
I arrived in North Providence to find that my mother had been transferred from the hospital to a nursing home that she has to pay cash for because her insurance doesn't cover it because they had her in the hospital for "observation" instead of because she fell and fractured a vertibra in her spine.
My brother Jim, who has been handling her affairs and is not only her medical proxy, but has been assigned her power of attorney, frantically begged me to move into her house (despite the fact that my plan was to get an apartment) and pressured me to hurry up and establish residency or they were going to take her house away from her.
They insist that she has to pay down her assets, including her car and her house, before any insurance is going to kick in. The only way to save her house is to have a family member living there.
So I change my plans, start getting the utilities changed into my name, enroll my daughter in the school, change my address on everything and file a change of address with the post office, spending the money that I had to get an apartment.
Then my brother Jim tells me that they are going to take her house anyway. So sorry, but they are going to take everything.
Not a mention that I have just committed to living here. Not a mention about the girl, who has just started high school here. Not to mention that I haven't even FINISHED MOVING IN!!!
So, Now, he has been avoiding me and my mother for the last 4 or 5 days, when he was taking care of her and being there for her he hasn't even been to visit her. He was supposed to take her to the doctor, but she missed her apointment yesterday, and he doesn't answer the phone. Like he's avoiding me.
I seem to have been thrown from one hell into another.
