Be aware of Pap smear when you are pregnant?

During pregnancy, it is absolutely safe to opt for a Pap smear test. In fact, abnormal Pap test during pregnancy is common. As a woman of childbearing age, you are encouraged to be part of this test by the time you touch 21 years or within 3 years of becoming sexually active. Abnormal pap and pregnancy have a strong correlation as early detection would enable inputting to ease a lot of potential problems.

The moment you are told that you have an abnormal pap smear it is obvious you will be anxious and worried. It does point to the occurrence of infected cells. Take note of the fact that abnormal cells do not point to the occurrence of cancer in any way. Other tests like a biopsy where a small portion of the tissue is removed and send for a further round of testing. Then there is a colposcopy where the doctor with the help of a magnifying lens looks into the cervix. Then the doctor would go on to evaluate the results with you.

2 out of 20 abnormal pap tests point to some form of issues. In most cases, they do not prove to be serious. You would need to outline the major cause for the occurrence of an abnormal pap smear. For cervical cancer, the main cause is HPV virus. For a woman who does go on to receive treatment for abnormal cells that emerge out of HPV does not mean that you are suffering from cervical cancer.

The FDA in the year 2003 did approve of a test that could be undertaken in conjunction with a Pap smear test. It would enable you to figure out whether you are suffering from HPV virus. Any high-risk patterns of HPV can be figured out before a cervix detects abnormal cells. This type of screening is suggested for women who are above the age of 30 years where HPV infection turning into pre-cancer cells are on the higher side.

In certain cases, a Pap smear test may point to an unsatisfactory sample. This can arise due to instances of recent sexual activity or touching on a large scale. Whatever be the reason an abnormal Pap smear test would mean that you require another one in a few days. If still, the abnormal cells keep on persisting back advanced forms of treatment may be needed.
