Bad things happening to good people

It's a sorrowful time.  It's a struggle to keep my mood at OK.  While nothing has happened to me personally, I am grieving for friends.  One has broken her elbow.  One is having severe cardiac problems.  Another, who is 90, fell and broke her neck.  She is in a rehab nursing home.  I miss her so much!  It is doubtful she will be able to return to regular senior living.  The place just isn't the same without her! She's like the grandmother everybody had--or wished they had.
Those of us with weight issues ALWAYS turn to food when things are sad.  I've got it reasonably under control now, but my scale is showing the weeks (months?) that I didn't do so well.  In the MAY issue of REDBOOK, Geneen Roth has an article about trying to fill the void (any void) with food.  She claims that "restless" feeling, that craving, that empty pit, is actually our need for GOD.
Most people when they think of GOD, have associations with RELIGION that are unpleasant.  Just calling God "father" brings up issues with our earthly father.  As adults we need to see God as a spiritual SOURCE.  No human being can fill the void; we get co-dependent on someone who is probably weaker than WE ARE.  No substance can fill the void.  Can anyone share with me a time when they felt God's presence as LOVE, COMFORT, STRENGTH, ABUNDANCE? I have so many rotten memories of "religion" that get in the way.
