Pain that originates in the spine usually happens when you lift something heavy or twist your back in a certain way. The pain is usually centered on the center portion of the back although it can radiate down the back of the leg or even around the trunk if the origin of the pain is in the thoracic area.
Kidney Pain
Kidney pain can come on rather quickly, just like back pain, but it is usually unassociated with any kind of bending or twisting activity of the back. It is usually not located in the center part of the back but is more located to one side of the back, in the flank area. This is the side of the back in about the mid-portion. It is rarely on both sides of the back at the same time.
