Back in the Driver's Seat
Well, having been sick all weekend & only exerting energy to shovel snow & cook one dinner, I've had plenty of time to slow down, think & re-assess.
I've got to get back in the driver's seat in my life. That horrible PPT meeting really threw me for an unexpected loop; honestly, it felt like when we had the fire all over again. At the time I was desparate & quickly agreed to everything everyone suggested, just to expedite getting DS back into school. But now I've calmed down & need time to back up & go slowly.
- First: I've sent an email to the school, postponing until further notice DS's meeting with the Bureau of Rehabilitation Services (BRS). At the time when they first suggested it to me (during the throes of the PPT), it sounded like a good idea--get him transitioning to post-school work-life. But I'm looking at it some more & it's a state agency & I'm not so sure I want him or us to be tangled up in it. For one thing, the wording is all "disability" & I've been careful to frame DS's problems as "challenges". After all, he's not blind, deaf, in a wheelchair or severely mentally handicapped! For another, as he approaches manhood, I think it's important that he make the decision & if he needs me to sign off on it, that's ok.
- Second: one more month till we're "off the radar". No news is good news, I guess?? In any event, I'm not borrowing any trouble...
- Third: I have a couple more immediate things to address: 1-their concert on Wednesday, which I have to prep their clothes for, and 2-the youth retreat that DS is going to, which I have to get his things together by Thursday afternoon. (And there is laundry to do in the middle of all this.) Then he will leave on Friday. And 3-my daughter's 16th birthday!
- Fourth: I think once I'm over this immediate hump, I can focus on other things, like preparing our taxes, cleaning the house (got away from me when sick), etc.
