Averie's birth story

I lost my baby girl, Averie, June 15, 2015. I was 37w5d. I was told Averie and I were "normal & healthy" at every visit until a week before I had her. I noticed decreased fetal movement and informed my OB. She ordered fetal monitoring and ultrasound. During the ultrasound I was told Averie had a two-cord vessel and that could be a marker for Downs Syndrome. I was instantly upset knowing that there may be something wrong. My OB said not to worry everything else seemed fine. I was referred to a perinatologist but my appointment was two days later. This was impossible for me “not to worry.” My husband was instantly upset too wondering about all the issues that could arise with a baby with a two-cord vessel. At the perinatologist’s office the ultrasound tech mentioned that Averie’s heart rate decreased a few times down into the 60’s. The DR also performed an ultrasound and an echo but said all of her organs looked great and she was even doing her breathing exercises. He said she was healthy, just little. He said she weighed 3lbs 14oz as this was what the ultrasound was measuring. However, I was too be monitored at the hospital for a couple hours to make sure her heart rate was ok. So I went to the hospital for two hours of monitoring and was told everything was fine and I was discharged. Four days after that my water broke. I called my OB and she told me to come to the hospital. My husband got us there in no time. Excited and scared…we were ready to meet our baby girl!!! Up to labor & delivery to be assigned a room and hooked up to the monitor only to find out….there WAS NOT A HEARTBEAT. I knew instantly when it was taking the nurse too long to find the heartbeat with the monitor and when she put it on there and I didn’t hear the precious beat anymore. Two ultrasounds later, one of which was performed by an MD, I was still told there was not a heartbeat. I was praying please let the nurse and I be WRONG. Please let my baby have a heartbeat, Please GOD!! I was then seen by my OB and informed we would be inducing labor. The hope was for a VBAC as I had a C-section with my son, who is now almost 3. Eight hours after starting the induction and two hours after epidural, I had Miss Averie. Hoping the technology and DR’s were wrong, I still waited for her to cry. But she didn’t and our lives were SHATTERED.
