The grapes used to produce The Powerhouse Pinot Noir were hand-picked from vineyards nestled on river bands north of Hobart, Tasmania. The Powerhouse Pinot Noir is light, fruit forward, and is earthy pressing matters pinot noir 2018 with aromas of forest floor gamay. Rich fruits of dark cherry and black plum combined with powdery tannins make for a smooth finish. Enjoyable now, this wine may also be confidently cellared.

Claudio worked the 1987 and 1989 vintages in Bordeaux and travelled to various wine regions in France and Italy. Claudio was senior winemaker at Goundrey Wines in 1990 and 1991 which is where he met his life partner Lindy Bull. In 1992, Claudio returned to his home state to be with Lindy at her family’s Freycinet Vineyard. The bouquet was great,it was light and refreshing I have no hesitation recommending this wine and will buy it again.
A pretty wine, not very deep in fruit, not quite raspberry cordial-like, but not so concentrated and layered. Light grip, pleasant herbal and floral character, almost like chamomile tea in a way, with a light brisk finish and a lick of tannin to close. It’s not trying too hard, and doesn’t feel forced into being anything more than it is; which is a nice drink, and easy to enjoy. Better with a little more bottle age, most likely." 2017 Holm Oak Hot Shot (A$130) gained a lower rating than its stable-mate, but not from me. The two share suppleness, but for me this wine shows greater finesse, length and complexity, the last from a whole-bunch influence.

The wine displays a juicy, sweet fruit flavour with some wonderful soft gentle tannins and fresh acid. Harvested during the cool early morning temperatures, the grapes were destemmed and crushed without delay. The crushed fruit was allowed to soak at cool temperatures for 2-3 days, then inoculated and fermented at between 25-30°C in stainless vessels. The wine was gently pressed off skins prior to full malolactic fermentation. Bottled early under screw cap to preserve intensely perfumed aromas and rich, vibrant fruit with soft velvety tannins.
I’ll repeat something I regularly say about assessing pinot noir, that is to ignore depth of colour and even the hue. Pale, browning colours are no indication of lack of flavour or tiring, as they are also not with nebbiolo, nero mascalese and sometimes grenache. It was great to see pinots with bottle age available, with several 2015s, 2014s and older. A feature of Tassie pinot is that it ages remarkably well.

The Collection series are a set of premium wines from hand-picked regions around the world – each crafted to reflect a supreme sense of place and exceptional character. It was a warm and dry season throughout Tasmania and the harvest began early, with some fruit for sparkling coming off in February. Pinot Noir was picked in our Tamar Valley vineyards beginning mid-March.
The unique terroir of our estate produces a distinctively dark and dense Pinot Noir that opens up with time and patience. A lot has changed since my first visit to Tassie in the mid 1980s. I visited wineries like Moorilla and La Provence , Pipers Brook, Freycinet, Elsewhere Vineyard, Stoney Vineyard , Marion’s Vineyard, Panorama Vineyard and Meadowbank. Tasmania’s total crop was 154 tonnes, the size of a small mainland winery. There are now some 230 vineyards, and approximately 95 cellar doors. These billy button flowers represent the natural beauty of the island.

The hand picked fruit is lightly crushed and destalked into a rotary fermenter with 5% whole bunches and a pure yeast culture incorporated. The ferment temperature is allowed to peak at 32 degrees. The 2018 Pinot Noir goes back to the styles of the 2015 and 2016 vintages of Stoney Rise. There is more obvious upfront fruit on the nose, with hints of pomegranate and bright red cherries. The palate is soft and luscious upfront, but then the dollop of old vine fruit takes over and you are left with a hint of tannin, some complementing acidity and a long finish. Whilst it is upfront and easy drinking, the 2018 with its poise and structure will reward with some time in the cellar. Concentrated cherry and berry fruit flavours, charry oak and velvety tannin persisting in a long finish. Partial whole bunch fermentation adds layers of savoury interest.
Not perfect, but an attractive wine to drink.” I thought the tannins dry, but fine and the overall balance is good. “The aromas are of raspberry and red cherry – fresh, bright and lively with lovely fruit-sweet succulence on the palate,” he wrote. “Abundant dark cherry flavours, quite delicious, although the tannins are a mite drying and firm at this point.” I agreed on the tannins.
