Attempt at Starting New
My doctor has been telling me for a couple months to try and join a support group to try & calm some emotions following a traumatic experience that happened earlier this year. I guess, here goes nothing! On July 10th, 2017 I was involved in a sever grease fire after a freak accident occured. I was transported by ambulance to the nearest airport where I was then transfered to a "life-flight" chopper. I was flown to Tampa General Hospital about 2 hours from home and then placed in the ICU due to 2nd, 3rd, & 4th degree burns on both legs and both arms (left side took most damage). I was so drugged up on pain meds at first, I didnt know much of what was going on but since then my memory has come back a little. I overheard the ICU head nurse discussing "amputation" with my doc on my left hand since it was completely burnt off. Thankfully they decided to give another direction. To let it heal on its own! Imagine that.. However, both legs and arms went through the whole skin graft ordeal. That was a LONG process. Mostly because they took more skin from another spot on my body for the donations (I'll talk more about that later). I was told I would be in the hospital for a minimum of a month and that alone terrified me. I dont remember being in so much physical pain I wasnt able to manage but as time goes on, I realize that most my damage was done mentally & emotionally. I thank god every single day for allowing me to wake up and take another breath on this planet but often times I also have to ask "Why?" I was recently told I have what's called PTSD but I didnt get any answer when I asked how to get rid of it. There have been SO MANY nights (sometimes in a row) that i've gone without sleep because I'm scared to sleep. I have nightmares or night terrors whatever you chose to call them pretty much everytime I try to get some shut eye. I have flashbacks that come and go at random times. Ive noticed I have a few tricks that launch a full on massive panic attack. (Ex. Fire Alarms, Car Alarms, Sirens, Seeing Smoke, & Smelling Smoke). I hate to look at myself in the mirror because of the scars I now have. Before the fire I already had very low self-esteem due to my size but now its 10x worse. I cant get myself to wear anything but long sleeves and jeans, ive isolated myself from friends and family, ended up dumping the man I was with because I felt as though I was just holding him back. I dont want to keep living this way. I cant do it. Does anybody have any tips or tricks? Please help!
