Appointment with peditrician
My 2 year old grandson has been having alot of problems lately.HE had been accident free in potty training for about 3 weeks and now he is back to telling me after the fact.He has been going to DCI school [a branch of EARLY INTERVENTION] for about a year to work on his social problems and speech. Before going to school he would stay in his room for hours and wanted no contact with anyone not even us and he could only say about 5 words. Here lately his vocabulary was up to about 75 words and he tolerated people alot better, was still territorial but would tolerate people around him.He had the normal 2 year old temper tantrums and we thought they had slacked off. Now it's like we are back to square one.He has went backward on pottying. He still talks but alot of times when he tries to talk it comes out as babble. He seems to think he is actually talking but all we hear is babble and he gets frustrated because we don't understand. The temper tantrums are back in full force, too. He will hit, bite, kick, and beat his head on the floor or wall.If some one tells him 'no' about something he will try to smack them in the face.Where he gets this we have no idea, because we have never used smacking as dissipline. The first time he smacked me I smacked him back before I realized what I had done Then I cried harder than he did.I have never hit a child in the face but he just caught me off guard and it was like a natural reflex.I felt like the world's worst mother!! Anyway,I talked this all over with the EI ladies and then made an appt. with his dr for today. When we sat down with DR.P. I told him all this and he told me that he would do all that was possible to get him the help that he needed. He told me that my daughter, the boys' mother, had haunted him for years because he said now he believes that she may be AUTISTIC and he was too young in his practice when he treated her to realize it.He said if he knew then what he knew now he could have done more for her and things might have been different for her.He told me that she was the biggest regret of his carreer, that he could not help her more.As you can guess I have a long and very close relationship with our DR,so I ended up comforting him by telling him that her problems were not his fault but that I appricated the fact that he cared so much to worry so much over it.He ended up promissing me that he wouldnot make the same misstakes with her sons as he did with her. He is now setting up OT and mental health evaluations and genetics testing along with other specialist, one of which has at least a 6 months waiting list ,I have been told by several people. When I told him this he said he could get around that as he is good friends with him and would call him personally. How great is that!!! I feel so good that maybe now we are on the right track to getting my little man the help he needs.I was so afraid that he would end up like his bio mother, with all her problems.I love my daughter very much and it breaks my heart that she has all the problems she has.But now she even seems to be getting her life together. She is off the drugs and pregnant again with a little girl due the end of this month. And it's all due to the new man in her life who is 51 years old and very strict on her and watches her like a hawk.He even now has her diabetes under control by being so strict and loving her enough to be so. At first I wasn't happy about the age difference [she is 22] but now I see that that's just what she needs, someone older, wiser and stronger willed than her.So now I am very happy with the relationship!!And now I understand what my grandma ment when she said"It's better to be an old man's darling than a young man's slave."
