Go to the retro clothes stores and antique shops in the Gothic district, the international brand stores on la Rambla, or wander around the flea market on Plaza Real. From clothes, bathing suits, beach and pool wear, to furniture, appliances, electronics, kitchenware and even a supermarket in the basement if you want to kill 20 birds with one stone Corte Ingles is your greatest ally. This is about a 20 minute walk from the cruise port, or a quick 5 minute taxi ride. Louis Vuitton, Coco Chanel, Gucci amongst plenty of other classy names, line this famous street.
All veddy well and good, but personally, I’ve always had a soft spot for London shopping’s quirkier side – and there’s more of it than ever before. The uptown Gràcia neighbourhood – not to be confused with the Passèig de Gracia – also boasts its share of indie/vintage boutiques. The Barri Gótic is wonderful for quirky little boutiques, vintage, and antiques shops.
Your go to place was the centuries-old Els Encants flea market. Before it became a fantastic architectural icon, it was a pretty grimy affair. If you didn’t lose your vaciado de pisos euros to a pickpocket you would parting them out for what you thought was 1970s desk lamp; only to see the rubbed out IKEA stamp upon closer inspection at home.
It’s difficult to give a true objective opinion of what is happening at Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter in general but very especially at Las Ramblas. A place that has always had its own personality, a unique identity that started with all those family owned historic business that, along several generations not only gave a touch of color to such a special place. Were also premises where lifelong customer’s nice treatment came first beyond the most aggressive marketing campaigns. Really unique shops where each one showed an image that with the time had become iconic. Personal decorations, antique furniture, even other ways to deal with the customers, lead to a uniformity in all senses. Department store’s homogeneity, franchises and the most popular brands.
Barcelona is the perfect place where I got amazing sweet treats. I was spoilt for choice with the selection of confectionery shops over there. I would suggest that if you are planning on doing a lot of shopping, then your best bet is to go to somewhere large like La Roca village where you are almost guaranteed to find something.
