"Reports claim the mother bear heard her cub’s cries while workers attempted to puncture the stomach of the creature to harvest bile, which is believed to have healing properties.
The enraged mother bear broke free from her cage causing the workers to scatter in fear. She then made her way to her frightened cub and proceeded to make a futile attempt to free the scared animal.
After efforts to free her offspring failed, she hugged her cub before strangling it to death. Witnesses allege the mother bear dropped her dead cub before killing herself by running into a wall head first."

Asiatic black bears are caught, put in tiny cages known as 'crush cages' to restrict the bear's ability to move -- most bears live the rest of their lives on their backs inside these cages.
Then surgical tubes are permanently implanted into their abdomens - the opening is susceptible to infection and disease. Workers will then draw out ("milk") their bile twice DAILY.
This process is so incredibly painful that the bears try to gnaw off their paws and kill themselves by punching themselves in the stomach to stop the pain/end the torture.
Ergo, bear farmers are fitting the bears with iron vests to stop the bears from killing themselves and ending the pain.

The procedure is COMPLETELY POINTLESS, as there are herbal and synthetic alternatives that are just as effective or superior to bear bile, and are much cheaper to buy and produce without hurting or torturing anything.
Bear farmers lie, by supplying the demand for bear bile their industry protects wild bears. In fact wild bear bile is considered more potent, and killing wild bears is at an all time high.
Bears are kept in tiny cages (factory farming, as pigs, chickens, lamb and cow are in U.S.A.) for 20 years, although 5 to 10 years is more the average, before they stop producing bile and the bear is then killed/harvested. Bears, dogs and cats are literary treated as a crop in China (FACTORY FARM just as pigs, chicken, lamb and cow are in U.S.A.) The International Union for the Conservation of Nature estimates that approximately 14,000 Asiatic, Brown and Sun bears suffer this type of treatment, accounting for approximately half of the species.
We, the undersigned, respectfully call upon Hu Jintao President of the People's Republic of China, The Chinese Embassy Chancery, National Tourism Administration of the Peoples Republic of China, Overseas Offices of China National Tourism Administraion, Ministry of Culture of the People's Republic of China, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the Standing Committee to PLEASE put an end to this grotesque, atrocious, despicable, revolting industry, NOW. My Goodness, I knew nothing of these acts. How horrible.
TCM practitioners denounce the use of bear bile as there are cheaper herbs and synthetics that can be used in its place; yet, bile farms still thrive under little or no regulatory control.
Bears have been long known for intelligence comparable with that of higher primates and possess the largest brains relative to their size of any North American land mammal. They are highly evolved social animals, form hierarchies and structured relationships, use tools like sticks for scratching and throw rocks during play, and have been known to show self-awareness by covering their tracks when pursued by hunters and poachers.
I am no card-carrying member of PETA and realize humans are at the top of the food chain, and will by default use lesser creatures for our own selfish purposes, but as the more advanced and intelligent species, we have a moral obligation to treat these animals with compassion.
Chinese actor, martial artist, and filmmaker Jackie Chan is a passionate animal advocate and in collaboration with the World Society for the Protection of Animals, is working towards creating awareness for Asian bear farming. Lending support for WSPA or at least signing a petition is a small step towards preventing further cruelty, but even just a tiny bit of awareness can go a long way.
