Anaheim Update
Well, it's 2013, and I'm very glad it is here. December was a long month for our family as my sister-in-law passed away on December 17, so we went to Cottonwood, AZ for the funeral, and then got home just in time for Christmas. My brother spent about a week with us through the holidays, and then he went home to do all the things he needs to do at this point.
2013 has started off quite well except that here in Southern California we feel like we're living at the North Pole. It's getting down into the 30s at night, and today we have a high of about 56. I know that to most of you, that seems like nothing, but we're wimps and don't have clothing for the cold weather.
Yesterday was a big day for those of us in the Ovarian Cancer Orange County Alliance (OCOCA). We celebrated our 10th anniversary and had a very nice party at the Mission Viejo Country Club. We had almost 200 people come to celebrate with us. The area gyn-oncologists were very instrumental in supporting our activities, and they were "teal sponsors" who paid for our celebration of our awareness activities, which include handing out symptom cards to individuals and groups, speaking to nursing and medical students, placing ads in the local newspapers to alert women about the symptoms of ovarian, etc. We had two full tables of doctors, nurses, and medical personnel who supported us, and one of the oncologists, Dr. Leslie Randall of UCI Medical Center, was our major speaker. It was so nice of all of them to donate their time and money to support us.
Other than that, I'm starting to prep for the Bay to Breakers race in May, and we're starting to get ready for my mother-in-law's 100th birthday on July 1. We're having a famiy reunion back in the Midwest, so there's a lot we all have to do.
My new year's wish for all of us is to enjoy every day of 2013 as much as we possibly can. May peace be with all of you this year. Diane

Hi Diane you should come here to warm up we\'ve been getting temperatures of 45 C not very pleasant since our Air Con broke down. You do a good job with your ovarian cancer group, it would be good to have something like that here, but our ovarian cancer group is a national one, there isn\'t enough people to run a state to state one but they do a great job to. It\'s our ovarian cancer awareness month in Febuary, where the Sydney opera house gets lit up in teal and various hospitals and social groups have teal parties as fund raisers. Sounds like your going to be very busy in the next few months, I think it\'s great that you can walk so far with the Bay to Breakers. Take some photo\'s and post them here or on F.B. Hi Carol, I understand that you have had unbelievably hot weather lately plus the fires. We read about the family that had to stay in the water for several hours while the fire was burning all around them.
The good news for us is that we\'re suppose to start warming up today, and by the weekend our weather should be back to normal. Farmers have been watching their fruit crops as we are very close to freezing at night.
Today I go to mhy first OC3 meeting. I\'m not sure exactly what the organization does, but I know it is designed to coordinate activities of all the various cancer information agencies throughout the county. I didn\'t want to run for a position on the OCOCA board, so I agreed to represent us at the monthly OC3 meetings and report back.
By the way, I love the idea of the Sydney opera house being lit up in teal. That must be a wonderful sight. I\'ve only seen pictures of the opera house, and it is just a dream that I\'ll ever get there, but what a wonderful thing for it to be lit up in teal.

Hi Diane, No pity from me for cold weather - I\'ll take 50 any day :). It\'s below freezing here today and they\'re forecasting single digit temps by Monday. I\'ve been anemic lately and simply cannot handle the cold.
So sorry about your sister-in-law but am glad you made it to AZ. Wonderful that your MIL will be 100. What a good excuse for a reunion.
We have a very active ovarian cancer organization here in Indianapolis. It is one of the founding groups of the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance. I actually stopped by the office today to say \"Hi\" and give an update on my status. It is great that Sydney turns the opera house teal. Our next big event will be a survivors\' lunch at the end of February.

Janet, I\'m so happy to hear from you. I know you\'ve been going through some tough treatments, so I\'m delighted that you were able to get over the Alliance office and get out a little.
I\'m originally from North Dakota, so I know I don\'t deserve any sympathy for complaining about the weather here. I hope it warms up some for you, although I know that January through March is usually pretty cold.
The 26th of January I\'m going to an ovarian cancer survivors conference in San Diego. It is sponsored by the Foundation for Women\'s Cancer. The conference will be given at various locations through the U.S. this year. It will be in Ann Arbor, Michigan on April 27, NYC on July 8, and Morristown, NJ in September. The web site is http://www.wcn.org/courses if anybody is interested in an event in their area. The conference speakers will deal with topics very pertinent to those of us on this site. I wish there was one close to you.
