An Unexpected Surprise
It’s been an interesting 24 hours. Went in the basement last night for some tools and what I originally thought was some minor pooling from the seams of the waterproofing, turned out to be a water heater leak…fortunately most went towards the floor drain, but I spent a time mopping up 2+ gallons of water and then stayed up later researching water heaters, rebates and suppliers.
I could replace it with some help, but have a weight limitation and don’t feel like screwing around, going back to the hardware store to adapt it with extra parts (it’s natural gas), which always seems to happen with a plumbing job. And expect it to take 2-3x longer than you originally estimated.
My first inquiry to a supplier/installer came in way below what I was expecting, as after talking about my circumstances and needs, actually only need a much less expensive model. How often does a salesperson sell you DOWN, instead of UP and a bigger commission? I appreciated her honesty, when she called back to confirm some technical information from their supplier. It’s a family owned business with a good reputation and been around for 42 yr. It helps too; that the water heaters are made in the region, so that knocks down shipping costs and thus a lower price.
Thursday AM: The guy came earlier than expected, he wanted to get this tough job done and out of the way as we’re heading into another heat wave. The hardware had to be bought up to code and part of the gas line replaced, as it wasn’t all that specialized black pipe and different metals next to each other, causes oxidation/corrosion, the latter I was already aware of. I did housing and building maintenance many years ago, so know if someone’s trying to BS me about something.
