Amazing what some may think about diabetes.
In my journey thru life with diabetes, I have run across some people whose idea about this disease amazes me.....from "You don't look" like a diabetic or "are you sure you can eat that" and even "you know you can't eat that", and many other odd ideas. I have run across human doctors who totally just don't get it...They are text book only, never look at the person, never understand how each of us reacts differently to food, meds though we have the same disease. As one said before I fired him for stupidity "but according to the medical books......"
But the one that does bother me is the doggies/kitties that get diabetes. I am a moderator for a canine support group, I speak for the doggies when it comes to diabetes and to help the furbaby parents learn about the disease and how their babies may feel, why they are acting the way they are. A person has reached out to our group, since her furbaby has been diagnosed and immediately the vet says to put the pet down. Luckily she didn't listen to him, but searched the net to learn and found the canine group.
This disease can be controlled even in dogs. The treatment is the same practically - insulin, diet and exercise. The dogs are like a type 1, they need the insulin, there is no pills for them. Yes it is more stressful and more time and scheduling must be done, even finding the right dog food without breaking the budget, but it can be done. They even can use Humulin insulin gotten at Walmarts lol.
Their numbers can be monitored just like a human's with some adjustments since human meters are not as accurate for the doggies so they learn to add or subtract to find the right testing numbers. Did you know doggies numbers are 80-150 for normal?
But I do not know why a vet would say put the animal down, it is not worth the time spent. I know many parents of furbabies who would disagree in a heart beat. I have special needs doggies and if they get diabetes, that would be the last thought in my mind...after all no one suggested putting me down....well unless you talk to hubby when he deals with my attitude during a low lol.
I guess this is why I am so vocal against this type of thinking, why I want to help whoever I can - if they want the help - including the furbabies. I even have my own group in the land of YUKU for the humans who just want to learn or to even forget for a moment they have an alien running through their body, and enjoy each others company....I even can find the humor in this disease, I can even make fun of myself with some of the idiot things I have done regarding this disease, in fact I have a whole section in my group just for this lol.
I had to learn via the net because of doctor's ideas over this disease, ideas that just were not logical to me. I do not accept anything they may say if it just doesn't set right with me.
I hope all going thru this journey into a new way of life take with them what is logical to them, question all, read and don't make a decision based off the first thing they read or hear....What may work for us may not for you...when we say don't eat the white breads, etc it is from experience (and of course what we read and realize why lol) and we don't mean to ever sound pushy or to scare you as doctors/vets tend to do at times.

Yes,I am upset that my sisters have no clue & are in denial about my diabetes even tho I\'ve been blunt w/them,& our own grandmother died from diabetes. The diet is hard for everyone,but the munchies are the worst,& my sisters make fun of me-not understanding how hard it is to fight them. It\'s a discouraging disease,a silent one,& support sites like yours make a huge difference.I gave my dog Bleux insulin shots 2x/day for 2 years.She lived to be 19 yrs old.I am not one to let an animal suffer,but if their condition is treatable, & meds will maintain their quality of life, I\'ll do everything I can to help them.Kudos to you for giving out such positive info.Hugs
I liked you journey. As you know I was in the dark about a lot stuff with diabeties. Ok, I am still in the dark, but I\'m learning. I was told that when you devolopment type two diabeties it was because you are over height. I learn from you and other that not true. It because you body is not able to process the sugar light. Thanks for all your help. I slowing learning.
