A void connects the library to the MAGUN Plaza below so that hotel guests can feel the presence and activity of the locals and the seniors living in the eldercare facility. “Denpaku + Magun” is a facility that consists of a hotel, eldercare facility, eatery and food mart, repurposed from a former supermarket. It is a ten minute drive from Amami airport, in the northern part of Amami Oshima, a subtropical island which belongs to Kagoshima Prefecture. The supermarket used to be a place where the locals gathered and socialized. This renovated facility aims to recreate a hub for everyone in the community, including the socially vulnerable and tourists. Widely distributed in Southeast Asia, Thailand, India, Taiwan, etc.

Kurokawa Onsen Gosyo Gekkoujyu is a vast 13,000 m² forest complex housing only eight guest cottages, each of which offers beautiful views of the night sky above this little hot spring town. The hotel was built with the goal of allowing guests to gaze upon the moon in the middle of the forest, losing track of time to fully experience the splendor of nature. The second kanji in the name “Ikkoten” (一壷天) means “pot” or “vase” and refers to a passage from the Book of the Later Han about finding pleasures from another world inside such a container.
Located in the southeast of the island, where time seems to have stopped thousands of years ago, the hotel offers panoramic views of Yakushima’s tallest mountain and its vast sea, blending with the natural landscape. Part of Kagoshima Prefecture, Yakushima is a 500 km² island located in the south of Kyushu. It’s famous for its Jomon Sugi cedar tree , which is said to be 7,200 years old. The millennia-old tree is located in the central part of the island, called Okutake, which rises 1,000-1,700 m above sea level and is surrounded by a vast primeval forest of coniferous trees.
In Amami, indigo dyeing seems to have been popular from the end of the Edo period to the beginning of the Meiji era. In Kakeromajima , there is a description that indigo leaves are harvested around August of the lunar calendar, soaked in water for about 2 days, pulled up, and then mixed with baked coral to make dye. At one point, Rika witnesses a pile of “medicinal herbs called weeds” that are piled up by mowing several times a year. From that time on, I took over the fact that I couldn’t stand being thrown away as it was, and I began to enjoy using it for herbal teas and bath herbs. Gradually, I began to wonder if I could create something that made me feel more like an island. Until then, Rika had worked for a music-related company in Tokyo for many years.
