Affirmation for May 17, 2011: Natural Healing
Fasting and natural diet, though essentially unknown [in today's U.S.] as a therapy, should be the first treatment when someone discovers that she or he has a medical problem. It should not be applied only to the most advanced cases, as is present practice. Whether the patient has a cardiac condition, hypertension, autoimmune disease, fibroids, or asthma, he or she must be informed that fasting and natural, plant-based diets are a viable alternative to conventional therapy, and an effective one. The time may come when not offering this substantially more effective nutritional approach will be considered malpractice.- Joel Fuhrman, M.D., Fasting And Eating For HealthThought of the day:Do you believe in natural alternatives to medication, even something as simple as today's suggestion that diet should be the first course of action when treating disease? Tell us your thoughts or experiences on natural remedies and alternative treatments versus conventional medicine, and whether you think they are effective.TeamDS

Absolutely. Even a good medical practiotioner knows, for example, to feed a cold and starve a fever. When the digestive system is struggling the first course of action is to stop feeding it and allow it to rest then, when ready, resume feeding with foods most easy to digest. This is natural medicine at it\'s most basic. Why do we lose our appetites when our tummies are sick? Because the system needs to rest in order to recover. Our bodies often know at a basic level what it is we need. Consider the cravings of a pregnant woman, where the body is asking for specific nutrients which are most in demand. More than considering food as curative medicine, it needs to be considered as preventative medicine, where whole and healthful foods can prevent many diseases which would otherwise require remedies.
