Affirmation for March 24, 2011: World Tuberculosis Day

There can be no real growth without healthy populations. No sustainable development without tackling disease and malnutrition. No international security without assisting crisis-ridden countries. And no hope for the spread of freedom, democracy and human dignity unless we treat health as a basic human right.- Gro BrundtlandThought of the day:According to Wikipedia, one third of the world's population is afflicted with tuberculosis, and a new infection is diagnosed at a rate of about one per second. Today is World Tuberculosis Day, which celebrates the day that Dr. Robert Koch discovered the TB bacillus in 1882 and opened the doors to diagnosis and a cure to TB. At the time, Europe and the Americas were experiencing the epidemic at ghastly rates-- 1 in 7 were being killed off by the disease.Today we are reminded that TB is still ravaging much of the developing world.
