Affirmation for July 16, 2010: Grocery Shopping

The odds of going to the store for a loaf of bread and coming out with only a loaf of bread are three billion to one.- Erma BombeckThought of the day:Ever go to the grocery store with your shopping cart, list in hand, and start off looking for the items on your list, only to find yourself at the register with a huge bill? Here are some tips to beat the odds, and prevent emptying your wallet at the cashier:- You've heard this one before: Don't grocery shop while you're hungry! Food will look much more tempting, and you'll be thinking with your stomach and not with your perfectly reasonable brain.- Impulse buying those small items near the register - like candy and cookies - is a marketing trick. They're placed there on purpose so you can just throw them in with the rest of your stuff. Unless it's on your list, don't reach for it!- Go to the grocery store more often, and tell yourself, "I have too much in my cart already. I'll get that item next time." If you go to the grocery store once in a blue moon, you'll stock up more than you need, and possibly get more food than you can eat before the expiration date.- If you can, bike to the grocery store with a rack bag. That will limit the number and size of the items you can bike home with - a nice practical restraint that has 0 carbon emissions :)Have a frugal day!TeamDS
