Advice needed Elective amputation
3 months ago I was on my motorcycle when a woman hit me. My foot was crushed causing multiple broken bones in my foot. As well as breaking 3 ribs and collapsing my lung. In my foot my 2nd,3rd and 4th metatarsals we’re broken (one requiring a pin) and a “nutcracker fracture” of my cuboid. I spent 4 days in ICU. My foot was in bad shape, and the pain was excruciating. From the beginning I had inquired about a below the knee amputation. I’ve been an athlete all my life (former collegiate track star) and was training for a triathlon at the moment of the accident. I had doubts about the quality of my foot after the accident as well as didn’t want the possibility of having to have more surgeries down the road, infections etc. when I brought up the amputation to the surgeon he basically laughed at me. My foot was to swollen to set a date for operation and I was given a week to “think about what I wanted to do”. After the week I was still on board with the amputation over the reconstructive surgery. When i told the surgeon what i wanted he again started to almost laugh. A bone graft was done to recreate the cuboid and a plate and screws was put into my foot (something I didn’t want). It’s been over 2 months since the surgery and everything has gone wrong. I started experiencing the most unimaginable pain. I was diagnosed with CRPS in my foot. I can’t stand for longer than 2 minutes without my foot turning almost black and the pain being so bad that I have to sit down. I want to amputate the leg now more than ever. I truly believe this is what is best for me to enjoy the kind of lifestyle I enjoy. I’m hesitant to bring it back up to my surgeon due to him basically laughing at me. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
