About To Give Up
I'm about to give up looking for a job. I'm tired of searching the internet and newspaper classifieds; submitting applications; and getting no responses. Nobody wants to talk to me. I can't really blame them. I'll be 65 in a few months so management jobs that I could do wouldn't be worth their time. Besides, I can't stand for more than a hour and my right hand get's worse by the day, and they don't know that yet. It seems retirement or disability are my only options. But, I don't want to retire! I don't like hanging around the house all day. Fishing is just about out because of my hand even if I could walk to get to the water. Really not into cleaning house all day and gardening with my legs is out. What else is there?

I can sure relate to your situation. I had to accept my disability and have learned to love gardening. I drive a four wheel electric scooter out in my gardens and have a \'hoot\' of a time now. It took some doing to make the transition and I was not a happy camper for a few years but I\'ve come around and now enjoy life once more. I had to actually fall down at Wal-Mart because of my muscle weakness before I was willing to use a walker and I now dont mind at all. They come in such fancy colors and have hand breaks; a seat and are, I guess, our disabled peoples version of our old time friend the Schwinn Stingray bike with its banana seat and sissy bar of our youth. For the years I fought my disability I actually had my left leg collapse under me one day breaking all the bones in my left ankle. Emergency surgery where they placed a metal plate on the ankle along with a cast and weeks stuck in an old style wheelchair made using a fancy walker along with a really terrific four wheel electric scooter look pretty dog gone good. I do miss working and having that life but I am happy where I am at and find it is really good to be able to bloom where we are planted. I still may one day be able to work at some type of job here at home and I stay open the possibilities but I have a lot of happiness in my life now and love it.
Be gentle with yourself and Im here for you and care. It is difficult to cope with disability when we are used to an active life. Most of my friends from that life have all moved on and now Im making new friends and seeing the possibilities once again.

Hi There,
I Can Understand, Too !
One Goal I Had Was To Learn To Play BRIDGE
Finally Learned !
Great Game With Wonderful People...
try container gardening! that works for alot of people. but dont give up! they right match just hasnt\' opened up yet! keep checking. you never know when things migth turn around. but enjoy the time you have off now! find something to enjoy...sing, do puzzles, train your dog to do circus tricks! have fun! you\'re alive for a reason!
Here\'s a suggestion for you.... in order to get out, try volunteering at a seniors home where you can visit and talk with others about \"days gone by\". Don\'t get me wrong, i\'m not suggesting that you are put out to pasture, far from it, but it would give you a chance to socialize, and perhaps learn of some benefit plans and other job opportunities that could come your way because of it. I\'m sure there is someplace nearby that you can volunteer at and get out. If you can\'t stand for long bouts, i\'m sure you can \"sit and visit\". They\'d be happy to see you. Take care, Mike, Hugs and Kisses, Deb :o)
