A year has gone by
It has been a year since I abandoned my home in Maine and moved into my mother's house.
(1) I am now officially bankrupt and the house is going into foreclosure
(2) Because I had little help and little resources for the move, I do not even have enough furniture for a single room, and I need 2 bedrooms because of the kid.
(3) my mother has only spent 8 days in this house during the last year, as I took her home from the nursing home twice - both times involved her falling, calling the parametics, and were followed by a week in intensive care and readmittance to the nursing home.
(4) I have come to the conclusion that my mother must stay in the nursing home - both times she was home it was a nightmare for her, me, and the girl, but my brother, who has her power of attorney, is trying to get her released: not to take her home with himself, but to dump her with me and go back to his recliner.
(5) I feel now that I need to be done with my entire family because they are all about themselves and what I can do for them and care very little about me, my needs, my health, or my feelings.
(a) my older brother forced me into bankruptcy
(b) my younger brother is trying to force me into slavery (because that is what it is with my mother, especially in her condition. She has dementia. She cannot walk and wears a diaper. She does not cooperate - especially regarding going to the bathroom, where she is unsteady and she goes at least a dozen times a day, despite the fact that she is wearing a diaper)
(c) my older daughter concerns herself with my needs that she suggested that I take my remaining property and discard it because if it is in "storage", do I really need it?
(d) my younger daughter has broken up with the jerk she was with for the last 9 years and found someone else (online) who she cannot stop talking about all the time (ad nausium) and refers to him as "a real man" and a "really great guy", dispite the fact that she has never actually met him. Though I tried to be supportive of her during the breakup, I am finding it really difficult to even listen to her now going on about the new guy and am a bit frustrated that she will not listen to me at all and I really need support myself.
(e) I have lost nearly everything that I owned and am very, very not alright about it. When I am finally allowed to get an apartment (or maybe a mobile home, if I can ever manage it), I will have to replace much of what I had in order to have a functioning home.
(f) None of my family has much respect for me - they do not listen to me, even when I'm right, and all of them seem to feel that they need to tell me what to do or what I should be doing instead of what I am doing - almost as if they believe me to be a stupid child that needs constant instruction.
There was a reason I moved to Maine in the first place. Much of what I have always wanted I have not lost - my hopes and dreams in a pile of ash. I don't know how to start a new dream. I don't know how to recover from this, financially or emotionally.
Not one of my family (other than Auntie Janet) has been supportive and actually has listened to me when I rant. And, oh, can I rant.
I hate living in my mother's house. I hate not having a room of my own. I hate having to sleep on her sofa and I hate having to answer to other people - most especially when those people are not managing their own lives in any acceptable fashion.
My mother's house has not had any maintenance done on it for over a decade - unless it was an emergency. It needs a new roof, the siding should be painted and the trim has not been painted for so long that the windows are falling apart. Her yard is over grown to an appalling degree (I've already filled up 50 bags of yard waste and this is not a large yard), and the gutters were not cleaned for so long that the water ran over the sides and into the basement, damaging the basement walls, floor, and a good deal of the mountain of crap she had down there.
Over the last year I have worked my butt off trying to do all these things around here - more to keep myself from going crazy than anything else. Because of her mismanagement of her life, I will not be inheriting a dime (most likely) from her, because she has squandered almost all of her money, and what property she has is devalued due to her neglect.
I could list some of the things that I've found, however, looking at the mess she has made of things just upsets me more than I already am, which is pretty bad.
I spoke to my lawyer about my brother taking my mother home and dumping her here, and she told me that because he has the power of attorney I cannot stop him, but I am under no legal obligation to care for her and her advice is to move out. I've told the nursing home social worker that this is what I will do, but I have not told my brother.
I don't see this working out in any way but for us to fall out over it. Then, my alienation from my family will be nearly complete.
Wonder where I will go next.
