A True Blessing

I have a friend who is angry and bitter about her divorce.  I have relatives who never found the right guy.  I have friends and family who found the wrong guy and lived in misery.  Then there's me, a happily married woman.
A few months ago I wrote a journal about how I thought I might have been happier had I never met my husband.  Now, I see my error.  Yes, I would be spared this pain, but I also would have lost out on the joy of knowing him.  I knew him a sum total of 18 years.  We were best friends who divorced each other but the friendship never ended.
Our wedding vows said in sickness or in health.  But my husband and I weathered the sickness and health as friends.  We'd divorced.  I'd moved on.  And then he called me about the golf sized tumor on his carotid artery.  It was me who told him to see a doctor.  It was me who sat by his side during the surgery and recovery.  And then I had my own scare, losing my sight, and him there to guide me, to tell me everything would be okay.  He made me feel safe.
Later, when my mother became terminal, my dear friend, my ex-husband was there to take her to the doctor when I was too sick to do it.  He was there to comfort me and my mother, visiting her several times a week.
As I said, the friendship never ended.  And then one day we married again and out marriage became better than ever.
Now, he's gone, and I'm left with 18 years of memory.  18 years of loving him.  18 years of being loved.  And when I look into his daughter's eyes, I see him still.
He was the greatest blessing of all--a true gift from God.
