A Town called Willoughby
Unhappiness and suffering are states of mind, so relief of pain cannot be found outside the mind.
Today I was thinking about a Twilight Zone movie I once saw and enjoyed.
It was about a man who was tired of his life. He suffered extreme headaches from the bump and grind of everyday living. He hated his job, his boss was an obnoxious micro manager who pushed him closer to the the brink of insanity at every turn. His wife was an ungrateful, unloving women who never had a kind word to say to him, she nagged and complained constantly about his shortcomings. He could never make her happy no matter what he did. He was tired of his life and wanted to escape the agony of living.
Every evening he would take the train home from work and dream about a place of peace, a place of harmony, a place where he was loved and respected as a man of worth and dignity. It was a place of sunshine and happy people basking in a world of benevolence. No nagging wife, no overbearing boss, no stress that accompanies life.
He dreamed of a town called Willoughby. Willoughby was a sleepy town of the past or the future, but not the present. It was an illusion of a place where he'd like to be, a life he'd love to live. It was a place he created in his mind to escape the world in which he really lived. He now permanently resides in a town called Willoughby.
Willoughby was a nice place to live, but it never existed. It wasn't real. Willoughby was insanity of such severity it distorted reality and rendered this man totally incapable of managing any area of his life.
So if life seems a little unbearable, never visit a town called Willoughby. All of us can rise above any situation that life hands us. All of us can live a fulfilling life in the middle of the turmoil. All of us can find a sense of peace and purpose. Inner calmness and tranquility is within you, within us, within me. We'll find it.
Don't stop, in that town called Willoughby.
