A time to rest
Finished the running year last week at the California International Marathon (CIM). I'm glad it's over. The last few races have been painful. I've got sciatica on my right side and trying to run with it was getting to be too much. Now I've got periodic shooting pains down to my calf. It's getting hard to walk without some pain.
But I didn't start this entry with the idea of talking about my sciatica. Instead, I wanted to talk about my happiness at my niece who also ran CIM. It was her first marathon. I gave her a training plan, ran one 20 miler with her and helped her recover from it and got her to the starting line. She did the rest. I'd love to be able to post a picture of her smile at the finish. It would light up a house! :) This was another time when my own success (I came in second in my age group) was forgotten in the moment of joy for her. I spent several hours with her, her friends and her family relishing her accomplishment.
It's been a tough year that got progressively better with the season ending with my team finishing first in the standings in both cross country and road running, my own results putting my on the all regional cross country team for my age group, earning complimentary entries in all the long races on our circuit for next year, and best of all, my niece finishing her marathon.
For anyone that might read this, I hope you note that I've left up the "I'm feeling excellent" on DS. It's because I am.
My best to you,
Todd
