A Sign of Maturity
I was talking to my son last night & he was saying he was thinking about all the money he gets for Christmas & on other occasions. He said, "I really should get a savings account." So I talked to him a little about savings accounts & how they work & he seemed very interested. I thought it was a sign of maturity on his part that he is thinking in this direction! He's always been pretty good with self-control as far as spending goes. My daughter, on the other hand, seems to spend it the minute she gets it!
Anyhow, it occured to me: I should set up a savings account for him for Christmas! I looked into what to do for setting up a child's savings account at my bank. All I need is $100; however, once they turn 18 (which he will in May), it's "theirs" & a minimum balance of $300 is required in order not to have service charges. So I'll be getting my Christmas bonus very shortly; I could set up a $300 account for him. I'm sure he'll take good care of his account & I can show him how it works. It'll also give him a starting point once he's graduated.
On the Christmas side of things, I'm all done baking & writing my cards! I started shopping & don't have too much to do before the actual holidays. (My husband says don't buy him anything; he buys his own stuff--fine with me!) My daughter won't be too hard. And I can shop for my mom & sisters after Christmas, since I won't see them until afterwords anyway.
And...just to keep a note on this: I told my husband that I was getting my hair cut tonight, since it's getting long & ratty. He's been saying how he likes my hair long (to me, it's getting unmanageable & uncooperative). Anyway, when I told him I'm getting it cut, he's like, "well, don't get it cut short like a boy's!" Gee whiz, I never do! I get it somewhat short, but not boy-style. But I don't think he likes that. Once I used to keep my hair long because he liked it. But you know what? It's MY hair & if I can't manage it long, I'm not going to! (After all, he's not the one who has to deal with it every day!) It also makes me wonder, when he says that he likes when I have long hair, what he'd think if I said something like, "well, I like you WITH hair!" Of course I wouldn't say that, but to me, what he is saying is the equivalent.
