A Pleasant Day
Today was one of those rare days both Hubby and I had off - at the same time! He had it in his head that the local ski mountain had year round chair-lift rides to the summit. "Let's do that, weather permitting," he said. Of course, I'm willing to oblige him anytime it's a) his idea to leave the house (he thinks he might be a borderline agoraphobic) and b) walking might be involved (he hates exercise because "sweating is so declasse!" Now, I have biked several times to said peak from our house, it's a 100-mile round trip, a feat of which I am quite proud (but haven't done it recently). It's also the highest elevation in our neighborhood, a towering 2006'. Our home is somewhere around 200'. I decide that if I'm going to be freezing my ass on a chair lift that maybe I want to go the gym first, so I get up early-ish and do a leg workout. Smith machine lunges and squats, hack squats, leg extension machine, seated and lying ham curls, and one more ham exercise I don't know how to describe because I dunno what the thing is called I do it on. For a moment the thought of finishing up with stair master or walking lunges occurs, but time is getting short and we need at least an hour driving time to get there. So... lunch at home, quick change, put on warm clothes (I know how breezy it can be up there) in several layers, we drive up. Wouldncha know, the lift isn't operating because they are gearing up to start making snow. The lady at the desk tells us which trails will get us to the summit if we want to hike and gives us a map. HE decides "oh well, WTF." So we hike. 930 feet from visitor center to summit, trails about 1.6 miles (one way). It was fun, and I was much happier than I would have been had we just sat on our ischial tuberosities (them's your sit-upon bones, get your mind OUT of the gutter) up and back 20 feet off the ground. Hubby was rather surpised that he actually felt okay on the 3-mile hike. We had a lovely seafood dinner at Uno's on the way home and I gave him a practice massage shortly after we got back. Arms and legs, that's all I can do. "Hurry up with the back," he grumbles. "That's MT2," I tell him, "February." "Oh goody. Just in time for my birthday." Guess I know what I'm giving him then!
