A letter to Mack

I borrowed most of this from other sources.  But it all fit.  I'm trying to regain a bit of "me" back.  I got no response from him.

Dear Mack,
I cannot force you to stop using. I cannot give you the results of the steps or grow for you. I cannot take away your loneliness or your pain. There is nothing I can say to convince you to surrender the familiar misery of addiction for the frightening uncertainty of recovery. I cannot jump inside your skin, shift your goals, or decide for you what is best for you.

You are not the only one faced with very real and very hard decisions.  Your addiction does not only effect you.  It effects everyone who loves you.  It effects your sons.  It effects my daughter.  It effects me.  Addiction is a family disease.  Your addiction has put us all in a state of limbo.  Not only you.  And we hurt just as badly, if not worse than you.  We don't have anything that will dull our pain.

I am powerless over you and your addiction.  All I can do is love you.  But I will not allow you, my addict, to become my addiction.

I do love you.  Always remember that.
