A great Sunday: OC Arthritis Walk

I did it!
Almost a year ago, I told my family that I was setting a goal to walk in the Orange County Arthritis Walk on May 16, 2010 at UC Irvine. I planned to walk along our local river trail at least three times a week to get and stay in shape. However, life happened and the first part of the year was so busy with deadlines that I put walking on the back burner. March and April passed and I still hadn't signed up for the Arthritis Walk. Then May arrived and I knew I had to decide: Was I going to do the Walk or wait another year?
I finally signed up on May 7, as did my daughter and husband. (Son always works on Sundays, so he didn't participate with us.) There was a 1-mile course and a 3-mile course, so I figured we'd do 1 mile since I hadn't walked regularly since last year. However, when we got to the 1-mile point and had to choose to go left (back to the "festival zone") or right (the additional 2 miles), I was feeling so good that I asked my family if they were up for 3 miles. And of course they said yes!
So let me amend that first sentence: WE did it!
Afterward, as I was wondering why 3 miles seemed so easy, I realized that I've been walking several miles every weekend: the arboretum last weekend, an international festival the weekend before, and so on. These have all been slow, meandering walks with lots of stops, but they were enough to keep me in shape I guess, even without doing my planned stolls along the river trail.
Oh, and after the Walk, we stopped at Native Foods restaurant for a delicious vegetarian lunch and did some shopping at Whole Foods market. All in all, it was a happy, healthy day!
