A Gentle Wind

Having quit smoking about 7 weeks ago I can relate to experiencing urges.  I don't want a cigarette I want a pack.  I keep that in mind.  So when the urge to have a drink or two comes ask the simple question...Is that the way I really want to drink?  Monitor the feeling and be honest.  After that there are so many options to let that urge go...

Voices inside the wind Kept me living in shadows My head banging Against the wallMaking the same mistakesPiling up on the shores of regret...Mumbling in the gutter Nothing I hated more - Those voices inside the wind Somehow I crossed The turbulent watersMany years ago…With tentative stepsThe voices stoppedReplaced by the numbnessOf so many yesterdaysFinally, In the spirit of tender whispersIn voices soft and unafraid I found some peaceLetting the voice be carried away
Gently by the wind

Thanks for posting this, Zach! I have a very similar thought process. I strive for the honesty without being brutal or recriminating. When there was no longer room for rationalization about how the night will go or how I\'d feel in the morning, I was better able to deal with alcohol cravings in the moment.
