A few things to think about when searching for a Surrogate Mother

Finding a surrogate mother that is right for your journey can be very overwhelming if you do not have an agency. I have come across many couples and individuals that have started to search for surrogates on their own and a few have been successful but others felt it was just too much to worry about with their already busy schedules. Here are a few tips to think about when trying to locate a surrogate mother for your journey.

One of the most important tasks is to make sure your doctor reviews all of her medical records from her previous pregnancies. You will want to ensure that she has already given birth to her own child and that she did not have any medical issues with her pregnancy. You will also want to make sure a psychologist that specializes in surrogacy evaluates her to make sure she is able to handle all the emotions that come with carrying a child for someone else. The last thing you want is to risk someone else’s physical and emotional health while they are trying to help you.

You will want to ensure that the surrogate mother you choose is living in a good stable household. You will want to try to do your best to inspect the house she is living in and talk the members of the household so you can get a better idea of the environment. I would recommend doing a background check on everyone living in the house. This will give you an idea if they have had previous problems with the law and to give some assurance that your unborn baby is in safe hands. Doing a background check is not a foolproof way of making sure your baby is in safe hands. This is usually where having an agency is beneficial because they will fully screen the surrogate candidate and do a psychological evaluation on them before they even present them to you. The agencies take out the hard work to allow you to focus on the positives of your journey.

You will also want to make sure you can connect with the woman that will be helping you achieve your dream of having a family. She is a very important part of this journey and you will want to make sure that you have a healthy connection with her that will last at least a year to a lifetime. If your personalities clash or if you are not 100% on the same page, then this journey may be more difficult that what it should be.   There needs to be a mutual respect and very good communication.   This is not a typical relationship so you both need to be open minded and be able to have open communication. Sometimes this is just not possible for foreign intended parents or intended parents that are already overwhelmed with the day to day stresses of their careers and that is why having an agency to be that third party for communication is very helpful, especially in financial conversations. Having conversations about finances with someone is already hard but having a conversation with a person that you haven’t know for very long is even harder.

The best advice I can give is to trust your gut feeling about someone. If you have a bad feeling or if the things that are presented to you just don’t make sense, the best bet is to continue your search. If you still can’t locate a surrogate that you feel good about, I would suggest looking into finding an experienced and reputable agency. A good, reputable agency will prescreen and interview every surrogate that they present to you. Having an experienced third party to interview your surrogate candidates will help weed out the women that aren’t doing it for the right reasons and they will also be able to help catch the red flags that would created problems in your surrogacy journey. Just remember to trust your instincts and good luck!
