Gentleman's Bowie Knife In Ironwood BurlThis Bowie knife has an 8 1/4" blade of 5160 spring steel with a hand-rubbed finish and a 13 1/8" overall length. The knife has an oval guard and threaded butt-cap of satin finished stainless steel. The handle is Desert Ironwood Burl wood with a throat made up of stabilized blonde Buckeye Burl wood and stainless steel spacers.
The ultramid handle sports a neutral shape, but the textured cut-outs in the handle help to make it easy to grip even if it gets wet. We didn’t notice any hot spots when performing hard-use type tasks like batoning and feather sticking. This is one of the more comfortable handles we have found on a Bowie knife. However, it's important to note that not all custom knives are created equal; the durability largely depends on the maker's skill and the quality of materials used. Therefore, when deciding between custom and mass-produced knives, consider factors such as the maker's reputation, the source and grade of the materials, and the specific crafting process employed.

By far the most abundant type of knifemaker in America are individual bladesmiths, many who started out as part time hobbiests that have gone on to be full time master craftsmen. Back in the summer of 2020, their old workshop custom handmade knife was destroyed by the dual hurricane disasters Laura and Delta. They got back up from that punch pretty quickly, though, and were back to making knives in a new shop within the year. But their history involves a lot of hand changing and stock trading and all of that is getting us off track. Through the decades, this has remained a family business.
